saw them in pittsburgh last night with horse the band, this and last year's tour were my favorite live shows of the 5 times I've seen them for sure. varied setlists are a huge plus and the stage presence is great. they sound awesome, will is singing more, even Martin & Sergio do some backup vocals. feels like a much more cohesive unit and I'm excited - def the best theyve been in years
well the gap between jackpot and pantheon was the longest in their career so i’m not surprised they wanna get back to the studio
i'm not a DGD lifer but it just seems like every time will swan picks up a guitar they go into the studio. not sure what they can do that sounds fresh at this point when you have 210 songs that sound the same. maybe they'll get a new singer.
i enjoyed it (i fucking hate that tillian dude) they were my favourite band until tillian and now that i'm older i can't see myself going back to those early records / that genre and appreciating them. i like whatever i say is royal ocean - self titled.
It's probably kinda hard to evolve the sound of this band while also still playing to the strengths of the members. I'm a super casual fan and just looked up how old a few of these guys are - they're younger than I expected, kinda makes those first few albums even more impressive.
the old albums are still influential and hold up very well, the first like 5 albums are pretty different from each other and from instant gratification and mothership on they started to feel more similar to each other. pantheon was a good shakeup from that
i enjoy every album besides afterburner. jackpot juicer has some all timers but it’s way, way too long
I haven’t revisited pantheon much, in part because of residual bitterness from the Tilian fallout, but having Andrew front the band didn’t give me nearly the high I thought it would. His features on their older songs seemed to use his voice a lot better and the melodies were way more interesting imo. The mullet also just plays into the band-becoming-a-parody-of-itself vibe for me too. I don’t mean that all to sound as harsh as it does but my expectations were a lot higher, maybe not for mixing up the sound but at least for recapturing the really epic soulful moments of the previous records.
i hear more influence from dbm and dbm 2 on pantheon than any other post-2011 record in their catalog
I am excited for the future of this band, I think they have a great lineup going in to DGD12. Sergio, Andrew and Martin all writing songs with Will/Matt leads to plenty of variation in the guitars (which is a huge selling point for this band). Their style is all about the dual vocals though, and you have to write songs in a way that plays on that - perhaps people find them repetitive/same-ey these days is because every song bar a few is Jon + a singer trading off cleans and screams? I can't complain though as I feel the quality is still so good - Pantheon had 4-5 songs that would go straight into my top 20 all-time DGD, 2 probably into my top 10.
animal surgery is one of the best songs they’ve ever written and that main guitar part is very dbm esque, awesome to know that was sergio
I'm a fan of the vocals being further mixed together than before. them layering vocals on each others' (I hope andrew does less self layering), andrew screaming, jon singing, will singing/screaming/rapping more frequently than what it felt like for a while. animal surgery is an all-time DGD song imo and I might be the minority but animal surgery leading into midnight at mcguffy's is chef's kiss
Rise just holds onto it. Lately they been finishing their albums like a year before they actually come out ;_; They were expecting a new single with the tour originally, Jon's ad for one of the festivals mentioned possibly a new single if it releases by then, but Rise held onto TCS3 forever and they just using that as promo
