one of the best first listens ive had in years, love every second of this record. may this be the version of the band we keep
Yeah just finished my first listen too - very good album, anyone who was worried about a drop in quality shouldn’t worry at all. Andrew is great. I wish they would not release so many singles in the build-up though, if I had heard Trap Door for the first time today I would have thought this record is their best ever lol
Is there any difference in the leak vs actual release? I remember rumors of things but had doubted it. I’d listen myself but I’m at work currently.
The mix seems cleaner to me. I can make out some vocal and guitar parts better. Space Cow has George Clinton in it now. I possibly heard some slightly different vocal takes on The Peak of Superstition, but I’d need to listen again and compare.
2 months later I like it more than I originally did. it really has grown on me and it is constantly in the rotation
Only skimmed this so far but the vibe is borderline unbearable, esp Andrew. Just feels like they've gone all in catering to a brainrotted tween audience or something with the autotune, production, lyrics... all of it. Sure, that element has been there for a while, but JJ and this take it to a new level. I remember enjoying some of Eidola's 2021 LP, minus the lyrics. Just checked out their more recent tracks and they sound very similar to this, which is almost a 180 and kinda hilarious. Andrew gives me painful fake good guy douche vibes tbh.
Haven't been able to dedicate time to it yet but I see Reddit comments saying it's better than Mothership and I'm just like............really?
So it did leak in July? My buddy was texting about the albums release and I didn’t know it was out today until he texted me, but I told him that it leaked some months ago and he hadn’t heard about the leak. I was like yeah, it was at least one or two months before it was supposed to come out..
still think this thing gets better to an order of several degrees if you just sub in Speed Demon for McGuffy, can't believe the latter was their first single choice lol
i did not expect to dig this at all based on mcguffy's and space cow. safe to say those are the two worst songs on this by a long shot. animal surgery is, without a doubt, the best song this band has written in a fucking minute. absolutely insane album opener. bunch of other highlights here, especially liked the robot with human hair resurrection and the stickler. the conquerer worm is so close to being a complete whiff because will swan is so fucking corny but jon and andrew literally save it.
also yes i think the way this band handled the tilian stuff was abhorrent to say the least. however i find it really funny that a bunch of these lyrics are clearly about how much they fucking hate tilian's guts
Mothership is the the best DGD record, imo But Tilian sucks, so I haven't revisited it in a few years
the triple screaming part on Stickler really does it for me, been wanting more screaming harmonies from them since the end of Need Money
Yeah I’m enjoying the album overall, but the whole, “fuck the haters, I’m in my own league” style lyrics are not for me, and I also am not totally sure what happened because Eidola’s lyrics were pretty cool to non-offensive until the last two albums (kind of a double album).
I'm on the side that this is better than mothership because that was a boring overrated album with some of the worst production they ever had. mothership also led them to how stale they became. didn't like it when it came out still don't like it upon relistening
Idk why mothership is held up as the tilian crown jewel when acceptance speech and instant gratification are both better. Jackpot juicer would be up there if it was half as long
Mothership was the only one from the Tillian era that really had anything for me, it definitely stood out as being considerably better than the rest from my perspective. That said, I still didn't listen to it very much.
Mothership has a few bangers but I personally think Artificial Selection is one of their best records to date.
both of them are like 4 tracks overlong with some really high highs, Acceptance Speech was the only one they made with him I really liked
I liked IG and Artificial Selection more as well, IG is a little hard to listen to for me now since it feels so poppy and AS is def a little too long but Slouch is prob the best song tilian made with them
I'm torn between Acceptance Speech and Mothership from the Tilian era. His vocals steadily declined through his whole tenure, so AS was his best outing. But Mothership is probably better instrumentally. Either way, I feel like an overall decline for the band started on ArSe... which is the last LP I care to revisit much at all. Nothing after Mothership even comes close to rivaling it imo.
I did a full backwards (pumpkin song?) to forwards discog run after this leaked starting with Pantheon to DBM1. I had always ranked DBM1 so highly but I think it’s more of a nostalgia thing for me nowadays. Still a fun listen, but don’t think it’s aged as well as some of the later albums. Top three would be DBMII, Self Titled, and Mothership. Honorable mentions are Happiness, Instant Gratification, Pantheon. At some points it was draining getting through some of the Tillian albums, but it was every album has so many bangers no matter which one you choose. Some I had forgotten for very long. DBMII Self Titled Mothership Happiness Pantheon Instant Gratification DBM1 Afterburner Jackpot Juicer Artificial Selection Acceptance Speech
