Huh, sounds fairly standard to me. The only uncleans in the scene I have a problem with are Denis Stoff from 2016 Asking Alexandria, The dude from Amity Affliction, and Jon Mess' DBMII cookie monster screams
Yeah exactly. It's an unorthodox stream-of-consciousness style that prioritizes flow and feel over depth but the lyrics also aren't complete nonsense either. I get why they would be off-putting to people, sue, but it's not like he's just trolling or taking the piss or whatever, he's explained his process in multiple interviews over the years.
Jon on Deathstar/DBM2 > new jon from a lyrics standpoint. He's not really interesting or entertaining anymore, and now he's annoying. I get that he's found his sound now but it's beating a dead horse for me. Deahtstar had heaviness in the vocals, DBM2 was almost like scream rapping, this is just kinda... there.
I think mothership is pretty different from AS and IG and remains easily my favorite. I would agree Mess should tighten up the lyrics but I love his scream and while it isn’t absolutely vital to their sound (exposed is one of my favorites), it’s a huge part of it.
Maybe I'm remembering them incorrectly, but it felt like almost every song on AS and especially IG was like a retread of Robot with Human Hair 2.5 and Mothership had a more unique v9be to it. And yeah, Exposed is awesome. Tilian is capable of great great things so it's frustrating to hear songs like MC where he doesn't deliver.
Idk how anything on the Tilian albums sound anything like RWHH2.5 but okay. I thought every song on IG felt unique and interesting, especially the use of clean guitar on that album was great (Awkward, Death Of A Strawberry), as well as the layered vocal tracks and solid production (On The Run)
The only real difference between IG and Mothership is production, a little more groove, and Tilian utilizing his raspy singing more.
Mothership is also way more theatrical and varied. You'd never get a song as serious amd dark as Deception or Petting Zoo Justice on IG or one as zany and eccentric as Chocolate Jackalope or Frozen One.
Chocolate Jackalope is an underrated as hell Mothership song. Will's smooth vocals on that track are classic.
It's cool that Tilian didn't try to emulate the other vocalists, I'm glad he's doing his own thing even if I don't like it 80% of the time
The only disappointing thing about Mothership is that Man Of The Year isn't a Schoolboy Q cover with Will on vocals
I just want something more groovier and fun like Summertime Gladness, Chucks vs The Giant Tortoise, Chocolate Jackalope, and Betrayed By The Game. This song is fine but there’s nothing that really grabs me like the songs mentioned above. I actually like Tillian and hate Jonny by the way. I never been a fan of Craig even before the MacBooks (lol) and would never want him to rejoin.
Betrayed By the Game is a tune and a half. That, Frozen One, Young Robot, Flossie Dickie... lotta good stuff and a decent amount of variety
New track has grown on me. At first it felt kinda stale and reminded me of IG, but the bridge with Tilian and dat groove behind him is fantastic. That bass rips
Still appreciating the way this song is mixed and produced Feels a lot more lime a finished product if that makes sense. Guitars a bit further back but honestly it all feels like a radio-ready song. (Y'know, except for the screaming)
