I’m honestly fine with the production/mixing on the original album... I know that’s probably controversial but it’s something different for them. I really don’t need a re-release that makes it sound like all their other albums with Crummett.
AS1 sounds fine to me, other than the loud/compressed mastering that's been pretty consistent across all their releases. I'll take the controversy one step farther: AS1 sounds far better than IG. The clipping on that one is ear bleed bad. I'd take a remaster there, even though it's my least fav Tilian release. The only point to remastering AS1 would be to take a whole new approach that values dynamic range, which... just doesn't happen these days in this genre.
is it cool to hate on IG now? pretty sure it's still my favorite front to back. I will say that the run of Deception - Inspire the Liars - Philosopher King is the best 3 song run they've ever had.
Honestly, I think Flossie Dickie Bounce and Here Comes the Winner make me think I like that album less than I do... Mothership is BY FAR Tilian's best performance.
HCTW absolutely smashes despite the tepid opening. Also Mess’ entire life is one giant never-ending peak. We should be grateful we even know he exists.
I got into this band on accident when I friend burnt Bone Palace Ballet on a CD and included Downtown Battle Mountain on the end of it. Thank you Jake.
I wouldnt say that the production on Death Star and Happiness is better than the new albums but I MUCH prefer the type of guitar tones they were getting on those releases. I think its cuz they were using mostly single coils back in those days.
