You gotta give it more than just one listen to decide! This band always has a couple tracks that seem off the first couple listens, then they start to click. Also, I love the intro to Nothing Shameful. So catchy.
So upon a revisit I think Parody Catharsis is about Jonny Craig. Lyrically all three of them are in the same place, and the last 30 seconds of this track closely reminds me of the same guitar part played in the bridge of TBPS around 2:19.
This album is really really good. I even dig Calentiamento Global, which on paper sounds like an awful idea.
Following along with lyrics on Genius in 320 is a trip. Jon's got some all timers, but him saying "TIlian make it stop" in Calentiamento Global is pretty funny. Will is such an unreal songwriter. There's so many little guitar flourishes you won't really hear without a dedicated listen with good headphones. Specifically Night Sway and Say Hi take on a new life. I think my highlights are Calentiamento Global, One In A Million, Parody Catharsis, Strawberry's Wake (what a 3 song stretch) and Nothing Shameful, but I love the whole thing. Still not fully sold on Born to Fail but it's growing on me already. Also, lol: "I can't believe this, I'm a fetus, I'm a baby boy My height decreases, I can't reach the counter, find my toys Once gave speeches, now they're screeches What can I destroy? I'm not lazy, I'm just baby tiny baby boy"
I've always thought it was obvious he's influenced by Jonny in the way he sings. almost like a combo somewhere between Jonny and Bradley of Emarosa, but maybe a slightly lower register.
Just finished my first listen. Definitely less hook-driven. I’m surprised they went this way. a lot of really cool unique moments scattered throughout but I’m not sure any song aside from prisoner caught my attention from start to finish.
That stretch from Statues to Sunshine still tops any DGD for me, both Tilian wise and overall. I mean, I get a lot of people are happier with him in this band, but let's not deny he fucking killed it vocally on Dreamhouse.
