I can see this one going up towards the top for me. I think it'll always be difficult to beat out Mothership from Tillian, and Happiness from Kurt, but this one is really good.
I really liked the leak but I only listened through twice. Excited to dive in for a legit listen when it hits Spotify tonight at midnight
Even as someone who really just longs for ToM and the atmospheric stuff from AS1/MS, this has grown on me a fair bit after several listens. I will say one thing without a doubt: the production for most tracks is lightyears above AS2, maybe on par with AS1 2.0.
I’m starting to think Born to Fail is a TOM diss track. They’re obviously dissing someone here hard af and it’s got that TOM Tilian melody callback. Damn.
does anyone know if the band members are currently friends with Jonny? I thought Tilians done guest vocals for him recently etc. I think a Jonny diss track would be old news unless something happened between them recently that I don’t know of.
It does really make you wonder what exactly happened during the recording/production of ArSe, it doesn’t sound bad by any means to me, but this and Mothership, and even IG, sound so much more crisp. They were all done with the Krummet.
I believe so, but I don't have the details or any source to back it up. I just remember hearing things back around the time he left the band.
I've def heard Tilian in some interview saying ToM took themselves too seriously and he didn't mesh with that approach. Personal grievances aside, it's a damn shame they imploded so quickly.
I also think ToM didn’t like that Tilian was trying to court Saosin for their lead singer position. Didn’t want him if he wasn’t “all in” with them.
Interesting. Imo worked out for both of them – they’re better as a post rock band and he’s better with dgd
One in a Million, Parallels, and the closer are my favorite of the non-singles. The mess stuff in the closer is especially is stuck in my head.
i consider myself the #1 jon mess anti on this website but i actually quite enjoyed his contributions this go around. i'd still probably like this band better without him but he didn't bother me here and actually made me smile a couple times multiple stab wounds yeah!
I still think to this day that 'Statues' by Tides of Man is the best song Tilian has been involved in. And I like almost every song he's done with DGD, but there's something about that song that's just at a different level for me. The whole end section with the bridge/the quiet Tilian-only chorus/the rest of the band coming back in for the final chorus is
On my first full listen through right now. Calentamiento has some great bass/guitar work but I don’t speak Spanish. One In A Million SLAPS, actually put a grin on my face.
Did not dig Born To Fail. Lyrically or otherwise. Roped me back with Parallels. I have to say that Will’s writing on this is the closest it’s ever been to the earlier albums but with a lot of taste. Matt is tuned in for every track. Mood swings all over the place. Night Sway omg Will leave some for the other bands.
I think I read where Night Sway is Sergio and Andrew? Not sure if that means no Will or not. edit: just Andrew, not Sergio on Night Sways. First thing I did this morning was download the album, put my headphones in, and dance around my house listening to Calentamiento Global while making my coffee. That part at 3:30... Tim is a gem and always kills it, but he seems even more on point this time around.
the last 3: Say Hi was very interesting. Again didn’t feel Tilian’s lyrics, but maybe one of Mess’s best ever? Feels like the one off they always have each album, but I like this much more than something like Story Of My Bros. Nothing Shameful started out weird. The “Take, all you do is take” doesn’t sound great, but Will and Matt again kill it. Mess killed it. Always impressive how much thought goes into his timing. Feature was good. Last track wasn’t for me. Will’s part was my favorite part of it. Saved 9 songs total to my playlist.
