yes Jon is sounding extremely good on these last 2 tracks - love that they seem to understand that having a “second chorus” or post chorus with Jon stuff is super fun and catchy
I am usually into the weirder side of DGD more than the poppier side, but Prisoner really does it for me. Reminds me a little of Betrayed By the Game with it's fairly simple but well executed chorus.
I can't remember the last time I listened all the way through ArSe, but I am now. Something was just... off on the production/performance here, at least from Tilian. The new songs sound much more crisp.
Agreed with this, and it's one of the big things that bothers me with that album. The sound quality just isn't the same as what they normally put out. I have tried listening to it on multiple platforms, and it is the same everywhere.
Most of the songs slap hard though, bridge/outros of Care/Count Bassy are incredible. EDIT: Man Shelf Life is so good. I have a head canon of this album not being quite up to par with the others, and I really don't know why. It probably could've used a little trimming (mainly Story of My Bros) but the rest stands up to the quality of MS and the other Tilian albums.
Completely stopped listening to this band when Kurt left. Been listening exclusively to them while I work out in the morning for the past month. Boy did I miss a lot of great Tilian stuff...think I was sour about not getting more Tides with him. Stoked for this release.
Death of a Strawberry is trending on Twitter, and it's pretty funny to read the tweets from people who have no idea what it means.
Legitimately thinking that if Afterburner keeps the quality up that DGD is in a really high tier of my "favorite bands of all time" list. 9 full lengths with only *one* that is less than stellar in my eyes. I'm more critical of my favorite band (Coheed) than that. I also feel like I'm one of the only early fans (first listened to Times New Roman on MySpace) that prefers the Tilian era over the others.
I prefer the Tilian era as well. But I liked them all. I've been listening since the DBM 1 but always liked Tides of Man more than DGD so it just kind of worked out for me. They aren't my favorite band by any measure but I do like the Tilian stuff more than others.
I was a big fan of ToM too, especially Dreamhouse, and liked the more melodic route that record went compared to Empire Theory, so when Tilian went to DGD and it was even MORE melodic than his ToM stuff, I was ecstatic.
I became a fan in very early 2010 and was able to see them with Kurt one time before he was kicked out. The two Kurt albums hold a special place with me, but I think the Tilian material is vastly better than the Jonny material. I had also seen Tides of Man once with Tilian (also perform as Jonny Craig's solo backing band that night), and I saw Tilian sing for Emarosa in 2011 as well. I was always pretty impressed by him, so I was happy when it was announced he was taking over in DGD.
I should have said that I've always enjoyed Mess more than any of the singers and that started at DBM1 with... Right now I'd be the bitch, But I left you, I left you in the ditch!
I didn’t care for the Kurt era but after Mothership came out I had an epiphany in realizing they were climbing up my favorite band ranks. Still surprising to think they’ve become one of the longest lasting scene bands.
My first time seeing them live was at a SMALL club in Birmingham AL right after Happiness came out. There were probably... 50 people there? Maybe? Oddly enough Tides of Man opened. Me and my buddy told Tilian afterwards they were awesome and he sounded like Anthony Green (lol). Only time I saw Jonny DGD was at Warped during the DBMII days, and somehow I've never seen them with Tilian.
It's honestly shocking how popular they've become. I didn't really understand the popularity jump that happened somewhere between AS and Mothership, and am still not really sure what caused it.
AS blew me away when I heard and brought me back to them, but I agree the jump was huge and surprising. I mean, in retrospect their sound did get more accessible, but aside from other scene holdovers I can’t imagine who these new fans are, I certainly don’t know any of em.
