The movie is brutal and wild and Spike is doing a lot. Wonderful.

This was a wild ride. It definitely needs more focus, but overall, solid.

That fucking scene. You know what it is. I’m still shaking. I need a cigarette.

Give Delroy an Oscar just for his monologue.

Yeah this was fantastic. I feel like Spike still makes movies like a student he just goes for whatever will work and you just can’t not pay attention. And I was starting to think I wouldn’t see his dolly shot but when he did I teared up I love what he used it for.

this was so good. I know Spike tends to be divisive but the AV Club's C review absolutely baffles me. it's like they didn't engage with any of the text or subtext at all!

This was so good, & such a perfect film to come out right now. Loved how blunt it was with its main political ideas, without it detracting in the slightest from the honest humanity of its characters & story. Loved Delroy Lindo's performance. And, I think Spike Lee made the right choice in just using the main cast in the flashbacks w/out really trying to make them look young or whatever.

Anyone else find themself actively anticipating landmines coming into play from the moment they found the first gold bar?

I agree with using the main cast in the flashbacks and yeah I was on edge the entire time they were in the jungle.

they couldn't have telegraphed the landmine thing harder but I still jumped, what a scene

I loved the cast being unchanged in the flashbacks too. it's like we're living those scenes out through their memories looking back - Chadwick's character is still perfect and in the peak of his life, as they remember him, but they're all old and damaged and have relived these memories thousands of times over. honestly it's kind of beautiful

The landmine sequence (after David steps on it) is the most tense thing I've seen in a movie in quite a while.

I am so unsurprised that r/movies hates this.

So many complaints on Reddit about bad cgi, using the same actors for the flashbacks, the battle scenes.... bunch of nit picky dorks

Nothing is more paramount to your average Reddit commenter in movies than an absolutely seamless plot. Plot holes are the highest sin.

Two detractors for me are the landmine sweepers and Jean Reno not really amounting to much. You could get ride of the sweepers after the landmine scene and leave Reno for his initial scene and I think it would be a stronger movie.

The more I think about it, the more I can’t imagine wanting different actors in the flashbacks. Visual storytelling doesn’t need to be “realistic” to be real. It’s about communicating whatever you wanna communicate.

Were people also upset when they saw Little Women, & Florence Pugh played a small child in half her scenes? Probably, lol.

Sometimes having both a younger cast & an older cast is the right choice. And, now that the technology exists to digitally de-age people, that can be the right choice, too. But, for this story, I can’t imagine different actors, digital effects, or prosthetics being anything but a downgrade from how those sequences work in the film as is.

It made me think of the Irishman, where even though De Niro looked goofy trying to play like 40 years younger, his stiffness and obvious physical limitations even with the de-aging technology added a lot to de-glamorize the violence and his work

Wow. Reading that this was originally going to be about four (presumably) white vets and be directed by Oliver Stone is wild.

You guys ever stop to think about how many masterpieces probably almost existed and then fell apart? And then the other way, how many masterpieces that maybe just barely got made?

de-aging tech is fine in the hands of a master like Scorsese, who always knows exactly what to do with the tools at his disposal. but if we get to a point where people expect it for every damn flashback in a major movie... that's bad. from the reaction to this it seems like people are already forgetting they can suspend their disbelief and engage with a movie on its own terms, which is literally how watching a movie fucking works

I know a lot of the praise we're giving this is for the heavy stuff, but the tracking shot when they're coming into the club at the beginning fucking rules.
