Literary lyrics like Cymbals and the Menzingers are the way to my heart tbh. Not even literary just...good. That's what it's (mostly) all about for me.

don't quite consider OTIP a rock album in the same way, but if it counts i'd put it above Lenses Alien probs. same with Home

That's fair, I think it's the most traditional "rock" album in their discog, what with the Springsteen vibes and whatnot. But I saw Manchester Orchestra and Cymbals thrown there, and I don't think either are particularly straight forward either. So I tried to define it to myself as what sounds the most "complete" if you strip it down to just songwriting and, idk, just an acoustic guitar, minimal change in arrangement, and still sounded close or whatever? i'm realizing now i overthought a simple question and my criteria is vague anyway

The Monitor is my pick for best rock album, but Separation Sunday comes pretty damn close.

the monitor doesn't have the "for the love of ivy" cover on it

it'd still be better than celebration rock even if it did

For real? I love it. I think XR is by far the worst.

Like some other people said, the lyrics really make XR for me. Love the vintage vinyl shout out haha. I feel like 2HS just kinda plods along and doesn't really go anywhere

man XR is one of my favorite songs on lose. some of my favorite lyrics on it, as well.

i don't really feel like waiting for the new one.

Place Names or Laramie are the best songs on the record, by far - those are my recommendations.

listened to LOOSE again last night and it is a killer record

    but

I stand w/r/t the immense superiority of Jackson

which is not a criticism of the album, but huge praise for the song as the album in general is solid AF

Jackson has the advantage of being a killer song with killer lyrics and also super accessible imo. Which isn't to say their other stuff isn't, but Jackson balances that line better than anything else on the album, I think, and that's why it's placement as the first song on the album is such a good place for it. It's like the thesis statement.

i've had a pretty unique (to me) experience w/ this band. LOSE was my introduction to them and i fell for it super hard, but i ended up forging even deeper connections to their previous records and so basically three albums' worth of anticipation for this record has been building up for the last two years. i ended up inadvertently constructing very specific expectations for what Pretty Years would be for me. which is bad, cause "wish" sort of shattered all of them on first listen. was really worried that i would ruin this record for myself by expecting too much from it. but then the other day i got high for the first time in years and listened to every cymbals record and then played "4th of july" and it hit me really really hard. in the same way that LOSE hit me two years ago. easily my song of the year so far, and the lines in the chorus are kind of indescribably meaningful to me. i think me and this record are gonna be okay

Do not understand why Have a Heart hasn't been released as a single yet

Have you heard this album already?

  25. I understand going with "Wish" first but yeah "Have a Heart" gives "Warning" a run for its money as their biggest hook
