i've been doing a discog run/ listening to these guys a fuckton lately in preparation. i thought it was out this friday. fuck.
truly overwhelming release day on Friday, got The Jesus Lizard and Nilüfer Yanya I am also seriously looking forward to as well. All of them are shaping up to be incredible records, no less.
This record is BADASS. MVP for me is the keys/horns player; he’s bringing it so hard on every track. This double drum tracks on Rookie! Can’t wait to give this some listens with the lyrics.
Exactly this! The horns on Bloodbather are excellent. This record turned out to be really good. Only heard it once but I think it might be their best since Mama, I'm Swollen.
Hearing great things about this so far, my brother loves it. Can't wait to listen today. I revisited Happy Hollow for the first time in like five years this morning and it might be my favorite soundscape they've ever created? Obviously The Ugly Organ and the cello stuff is great, and I'd echo that a lot of people were initially let down with HH as a follow-up, but as someone who doesn't typically care for horns, this thing sounds downright apocalyptic ("Big Bang" in particular). And the storytelling didn't take any kind of hits, either. I forgot how much I loved lowkey songs like "Bad Sects" and "Into the Fold." It's a great record.
I’ve likely said this on Chorus before, but Happy Hollow has my favorite Cursive lyrics. The storytelling is awesome and each highlights an issue in small town America so well.
Just wrapped my first listen, and this is really good. It's massive, yet there really aren't filler tracks. The Domestica/Ugly Organ/Happy Hollow run is untouchable, but this might not end up that far below for me. There's so much instrumental chaos boiling just below the surface, but it never quite spins out of control.
Yeah, this is very good. I know people liked the return of the cello in Vitriola, but this actually feels like the closest thing we've gotten to a TUO/HH follow-up imo. I'm glad I didn't listen to the singles a ton because "Imposturing" is such a good song
Vitriola has its moments, but this definitely feels like more of a return to form. Some of the cello on there felt like cello for cello's sake, but the instruments here feel more natural.
