We should bring these threads back, I was a fan of them. We somehow didn't do one of the greatest of all time.

    Notable Works:
    Mean Streets (1973)
    Taxi Driver (1976)
    Raging Bull (1980)
    The King of Comedy (1982)
    Goodfellas (1990)
    Casino (1995)
    Gangs of New York (2002)
    The Departed (2006)
    Hugo (2011)
The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
    Silence (2016)

Watching the Departed for the first time in like 10 years with my film club

Bump. I’m running through a bunch leading up to the Irishman. Raging Bull on now

Need to do a rewatch soon. Probably won’t do them all because there are a few that I’ve never liked and have seen recently-ish, but there are definitely others I haven’t seen in so long that I’m sure my interpretation would be different now.

My biggest omissions are Last Temptation and Hugo. And Silence, I guess?

Hugo is one of my absolute favorites and I wish more people cared about it. Last Temptation is one of the ones that I watched where I was so young that I enjoyed it but I know I would get more out now. Definitely an important part of his work.

Silence is one of the only ones I haven’t seen seen because Liam Neeson annoyed me right around the time I was going to watch and I never got around to it. I don’t think I’ll go chronologically through so that will be one of the first I go for.

Hugo is delightful. So unfairly overlooked. It’s truly worthy of being described as “magical”.

Silence was my favorite movie of 2016.

We tried to watch Gangs of New York last year but turned it off. I did not like it at all

I watched The Last Temptation Of Christ a few months ago and I must say I was quite moved by the ending. I wasn’t entirely engaged throughout but I found Willem Dafoe’s portrayal and Scorsese’s direction of Jesus quite unorthodox which was pretty interesting. But that ending is peak cinema.

Gangs Of New York I’ve watched like 3 times and I was never able to really get into it.

Hugo I watched when it came out and I can’t remember anything about it.

Silence I watched once and while I found it pretty well made, it does drag on in its length.

Raging Bull is such a good film. Not my favorite by him but a top 5

Idk what my full top five of his would be. Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and The Wolf of Wall Street would probably be the top four, in that order, but the fifth slot is a tough call.

I still have Mean Streets, The Aviator, and Silence left. I guess Hugo too cause that's the only one I haven't seen multiple times.

    Mean Streets tonight.
    Top 3 are definitely:
    Goodfellas
    Taxi Driver
    Raging Bull

Need to rewatch King of Comedy

Started some of the rewatch today, going for things I either own or are easily streamed first since that will cover most of it. Went for Who’s That Knocking at My Door and Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Alice will always be high on my list, but the unfortunate aspects of Who’s That Knocking hold it down tremendously. Seeing his mom cook at the beginning never gets old though.

The Sammy scene has aged pretty poorly

For sure. Along with the entire plot, really. There’s a lot of potential looking at certain parts in a vacuum, but the content is incredibly unpleasant.

The soundtrack, camerawork and acting are all obviously great. Lot of great scenes. DeNiro’s Jumpin Jack Flash entrance, the billiards fight scene, Charlie stumbling through the party. All good. I have never fully been able to connect with the overarching religious theme, but it’s still engaging. I really enjoy how much influence Marty took from the French New Wave in terms of editing.

The rare Scorsese film with nudity, right? And a pretty gratuitous scene at that

    edit:
Oh yeah, Robbie in Wolf and Linda Fiorentino in After Hours are pretty unnecessary as well. I guess an argument could be made for the After Hours scene

The sex/nude scene in Who’s That Knocking was THE definition of gratuitous in that it was forced in by the distributor.

Oh whoops, I totally read your post about Sammy wrong and thought it said Sally. Two separate conversations converged there.

Hahaha yeah Sammy is a pretty obscure character in Mean Streets.

2nd time ever. Been a few years since I've seen it. I enjoy it more than I remember it but yeah, some parts do not age very well. I enjoy how chaotic and loose it is.
