I watched JSA for the first time yesterday actually. Loved it. At this point I just need to see anything Song Kang-Ho is in.
He’s extremely funny in The Foul King. And Secret Sunshine is an absolute essential. In case you haven’t seen either.
He's in so many great Korean movies lol. Highly recommend The Good, the Bad and the Weird too if you haven't seen that.
I am finally catching up with Kurosawa's work after avoiding him for years. I saw Rashomon and Seven Samurai when I was deep in exploring the main canon of classic "world cinema" but was admittedly not into these works nearly as much as the European stuff I was watching from the same era. Caught Dreams a few years later, which I adored. I also went on a massive binge of Japanese cinema when the pandemic hit and still somehow didn't watch anymore of his stuff. Watched The Men Who Tread on the Tiger's Tail, No Regrets For Our Youth, and One Wonderful Sunday over the past couple days, the last of which really surprised me with its neorealist tendencies. More excited to move through his stuff than I've ever been before. And while it'll be great to catch up with the obvious classics like Yojimbo, Ikiru, and High and Low, I'm actually most looking forward to discovering the stuff from the 70s-90s.
Weird question, but does anybody know where the Criterion Channel pulls your avatar from? I recently signed up, and my avatar is not my gmail avatar. It's a much older picture of me that is not on any of my accounts, it's not even on the computer I signed up with. I'm extremely curious how that's possible
mine is my wordpress and substack picture? it’s fairly recent and I think only on those two places lol
Ah ok, I’ll see if I have one. On my mobile profile I just have a circle with my initial in it, wonder if it’s blank on desktop too.
so that was it, it was an image I used for a wordpress I had almost a decade ago. I didn't know "gravatar" was a thing. That was a real mindfuck for a while
Bumping this thread. I’m been devouring the FOX Noir series this month. There are some classic must watch’s like Laura, Pickup on South Street, and Nightmare Alley. But some of the other gems like Hangover Square have been incredible finds for me. Laird Cregar died two months before Hangover Square (he is also incredible in the featured I Wake Up Screaming), and I have no doubt he would have been one of the greatest actors ever if he had to lived to see it. the final 15 minutes of Hangover Square are 15 of the finest minutes I’ve seen in film all year.
I think it's a good streaming platform in general, at least it doesn't seem to be worse than others. /I plan on watching the Andrei Tarkovsky and Ingrid Bergman films I haven’t seen yet./ Almost every Bergman movie is must watch...I'm happy that you're gonna see some for the first time. His plots always have a deep philosophical sense which sometimes can be identified after 2nd or 3rd time. I don't use criterion streaming platform atm, but I've recently installed one of the top iptv platforms where it's possible to watch Bergman movies. Gonna rewatch some of them once again.
Going through all of Jia Zhangke has been a treat. I still have Mountains May Depart & Ash is Purest White left.
