I rewatched Lady Snowblood the other night. Love it so much. Really want to dig into more Japanese stuff soon.

I've been a subscriber since the beginning and just finally started watching (I did a few 3 month subscription pauses, so I wasn't paying the whole time) since there wasn't a PS4 app & I've now got a Roku TV.

started mellow with all of the Safdie bro's shorts, The Juniper Tree, and Dr. Strangelove. Next are the rest of the Safdie's collections (the earlier full lengths) & the Yorgos Lanthimos collection.

Body Double is baffling. I can’t remember hating a movie so much for its first hour and then completely flipping when I realized what it was doing.

I am now fully in on De Palma after this and Dressed to Kill.

    Those aren’t on Criterion, right?

Dressed to kill is. I just didn’t know where anyone else would be able to relate to this better than here.

Just realized this isn’t the main criterion thread. Oh well. De Palma still rules. Does he have anything on the channel?

Finished Stalker last night. I’m probably gonna need a rewatch and read some pieces on it because I feel like quite a bit of it went right over my head. By the end I understood some of the themes but damn

No worries, just wanted to make sure I hadn’t missed something. It’s only been recently that this thread comes up before the general discussion one.

So much great stuff is leaving this month and even with more time to watch I doubt I’ll be able to get to everything I haven’t seen. I wish some of what came on for the anniversary was lasting more than a month.

What should I be watching before the month is over. I started Near Dark last night. What else.

I think Sisters is the only one now. Pretty sure some others have come and gone at various points but I haven’t paid super close attention. I’m not big on his work generally, but I would love for Phantom of the Paradise to be easier for people to find.

The movies I could not stop thinking about while watching Stalker were Annihilation, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Inception. Those films owe a ton to this movie at the very least.

And also The Wizard of Oz

Stalker was my third Tarkovsky. It was when it all finally clicked for me; Andrei Rublev was above my level, and Solaris was good but not immediately noteworthy. Stalker creates more of a mood in a science-fiction setting than modern directors with 300 million dollars manage to do.

Yea as I sit with it and read about it I realize that my feelings while watching the film were not wrong. I just need to trust them. The dreamlike qualities, the boredom. The one thing that did cross my mind a lot during the film that I haven’t seen a lot of talk about was the Room real at all. It’s obviously ambiguous. But I found myself thinking that the Writer and Professor were just being duped. The final shot obviously changed things at least in terms of the Zone. But I was still skeptical about the Room (which is also intended)

Not sure how many you might have already seen, but there’s a pretty good amount of straight up classics leaving this month without even getting into other personal favorites. Stuff like Sunset Boulevard, Some Like It Hot, In the Heat of the Night, Day for Night.

Klute is one of my absolute favorites and something I’m always happy to see pop up streaming.

I think Vanya on 42nd Street is up next on my priority list, and I’ll have to take a longer look soon because I know I’m forgetting a bunch of others.

Appreciate the recommendations. I feel like I’m a film “buff” when it comes to a casual film goer but I have a ton of blind spots when it comes to actual film buffs. And Criterion has been eye opening in that regard. It’s like realizing you’ve been coloring with one crayon when there are millions of other options.

Oh yeah, there’s always more layers and always someone who has seen more, no matter how into it you get. Definitely just go at your own pace and find what speaks to you. It’s super exciting to first fall down the rabbit hole with it, and this service makes things so much easier. Finding just one movie you love can lead to so many other incredible discoveries by looking up influences or connections or a particular person involved that you want to follow.

Anyone have any short-ish recs that I should check out? I usually start a movie around 10 and try to get to sleep by 12:15 or so

I just watched Orlando for the first time tonight since it’s leaving and really enjoyed that. It’s only about an hour and a half and I found it pretty peaceful, so it might work for going to sleep soon after.

Just finished as well. A rewatch but haven’t seen it in a long time. It’s very good.

but I watched Paths of Glory about a week ago and I’ll never be the same. That’s his best besides The Shining imo. The ending is just amazing and that shot of Kirk Douglas walking the trench is one of the best shots in any war film ever.
