heads up: first two creeds are gonna be on prime and hbo max starting wednesday, for whoever wants to catch up or rewatch
this is awesome. majors lives up to the hype he got in this AND quantumania. there's one scene had my jaw on the floor with its poignancy. a couple minor quibbles with how dame gets more heavily involved but it’s easy enough to look past. one of the better films in the rockyverse or whatever the fuck you want to call it
I guess I enjoyed it, MBJ has promise as a director but boy his acting was shit especially in scenes with Majors and the always great Wood Harris. My main issue with the story was there's no weight to Creed's return to the ring because it goes "I'm back"->training montage->final fight. And "mom dying" feeling almost like a macguffin Empty arena fight was awesome Also thought Dame was overall an awesome villain but I guess I may just be projecting from his character in Magazine Dreams being a complete sociopath
oh no ooof lol now I feel bad I guess it just felt too telegraphed from her first appearance and that it would be a turning point when Dame said he sent the letters to her house. Her entire involvement felt too isolated to the twists, like being a part of the reveal of who hurt Drago
nah you’re good man. sorry it didn’t work for you. i’ll be fair and say i may have been a prisoner of the moment there
Thought this was okay. The trailers got me way more hyped than the movie did. First off, cast is great. Jordan might be acting a little too out of his league, but him, Majors and Thompson all have great presence here. Majors is the MVP because he gives his character a kind of menace and loose-wire feel where you don’t know what he’s thinking or what he’ll do next (arguably what Kang was missing in “Ant-Man”). The problem is that his character isn’t given a whole lot of depth or exploration. While they’re doing the “Rocky 1” thing of having the heavyweight go against the no-name guy, at least Balboa was known to box in the local circuits. Majors’s character hasn’t boxed in 18 years and is just given the main event and isn’t shown doing anything of note until the next one (at least give us the montage of him building up heat and experience by doing the Jake Paul thing and knocking out scrubs to build his record). Jordan has some promise as a director, but tends to be very on the nose (especially with the last bout). Felt like he made some rookie moves that Coogler would have avoided. I also felt like he was kind of pulling a Krasinski/“A Quiet Place” thing where he can’t help but constantly show us what good guy his character is, when I think the focus should have been more on Majors. It’s fun. It’s corny. I still think the first one is the best.
This was excellent. About in line with the first two for me. It absolutely needed some kind of montage of Dame boxing after he wins the belt. Felt so goofy without something like that
I fucking hated all the fancy shit in the ring. I enjoyed the film for the most part though. Majors is a menace.
Pretty good. Wasn’t super invested in the final fight for some reason. Writing was a little thin in the second half I suppose. Another solid entry still.
Hope to see this next week. Haven’t watched the second one yet, but that’s fine. Two main questions: - Does Jordan show promise here as a director going forward? Like, does this make y’all interested in a non-sequel film from him? - On a scale from “yes” to “absolutely,” how consistently hot is Majors in this?
Yes I think Jordan showed promise. What he did with the final boxing match was awesome. There were a few shots there were very on the nose (I think someone else also said this but it’s the best way to describe it) but overall he did a lot of interesting things and I would be excited to see him direct again. Absolutely.
The way the big match was shot makes way more sense, knowing that Michael B. Jordan wanted it to feel like a big anime fight.
