I’ve always considered “Walkaways” a kind of coda like “52nd Street” or “Her Majesty”. It’s so clearly a song fragment where “December” is a big dramatic closing ballad, that just always seemed the intention to me.
I do think of it as a post-script of sorts, but I do think it is a complete thought of a song. It says everything it needs to in a minute 15.
1. August & Everything After 2. Recovering the Satellites 3. Somewhere Under Wonderland T4. Hard Candy T4. This Desert Life 5. Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings
It's a bummer that they only have 6 albums in 30 years for us to discuss. 1) Satellites 2) August 3) Hard Candy 4) This Desert Life 5) Somewhere Under Wonderland (which is awesome, and underrated) 6) Saturday Nights
Whole thing is out today. The new songs are really good! A big step up from the first Butter Miracle imo, even though I still like those songs. Kind of makes for a SN/SM listening scenario where I reach for one side over the other, but whatever. Also, it’s funny that they just completely dropped the idea of the songs seamlessly flowing from one to the next.
Noticed this too. I like the initial batch of songs a ton so it'll take me a bit to get used to the album as a whole. Seems like there's a lot of story to get into on these too.
Really feels like they should have just let the Butter Miracle EP be its own thing and written/recorded more songs in the vein of the first half. Side 2 is just a completely different speed, and that's even leaving aside the fact that we've had those songs for four years.
I listened to the EP once because it felt incomplete, so not being tired of these songs I think the record hangs together pretty well. All of it is at least pretty good. A couple songs are great.
Wrote about an underrated Counting Crows track that has, over the years, worked its way into the place of honor as my favorite song of theirs. My Life In 35 Songs, Track 12: “Come Around” by Counting Crows Any other "Come Around" fans?!
Saw them last night and all the new songs sounded great. They didn't play anything from pt. 1 of Butter Miracle, interestingly (maybe speaks to how they view the quality of those songs in hindsight). They also played Miami, which was awesome, and Gaslight Anthem was great as the opener. Highly recommend catching this tour if you're on the fence.
