great review, i love all the imagery in the first paragraph. Not sure how long you've been writing for the alternative but congratulations on the gig!
Totally agree. They needed a musician in the room, but that would’ve shown them to be even less knowledgeable.
What is everyone listening to other than this? I’m legit having a hard time finding anything else satisfying to listen to. Lol
I haven't been a fan of Copeland since In Motion, but this record is amazing. The string of songs from Lay Here to Skywriter is perfect. I've also been having a tough time listening to anything other than this (which is disappointing because of the new La Dispute and American Football records being around too).
I've been listening pretty much exclusively to Blushing and A Conversation Between Us by Small Talks. I would highly recommend that album, super fun (but also pretty thematically dense) pop rock.
Tonight I listened to this with my sister’s beats solo 2’s and it was such a different experience, can’t think of another record that sounded so different across headphones. The vocals and bass (obviously) were much more front and center and the synth/piano much more backseat. I’d previously been using Apple EarPods and sennheiser’s and it was nice to hear the boom-y synth/percussion in Night figures actually, well, be boom-y lol they sounded really subdued and almost kinda bad previously. Anyone else have similar experiences?
The lyric “Cause you showed up with your hair down I might not sleep tonight” is actually a really great take on infatuation in your youth. I had moments like that with crushes in high school. I will defend this song solely on that moment in the song.
I had a backwards experience in a way. I listened to the record on studio monitors and thought it sounded fantastic. Saw people mention Night Figures in particular sound/feel flat and just didn’t relate until I listened on my wife’s car speakers with some of low end cut. I could kind of see it at that point, but ultimately yea this record sounds fantastic, particularly with quality speakers/headphones.
I've gone about a week without listening to Blushing and need to come back to it again. I'm in the minority that it hasn't grabbed me like it has so many other people. It is a great album but I definitely don't have that strong initial emotional attachment I did with Ixora. I do feel like it is close to clicking for me though. I wonder what the album would sound like if they did an opposite Ixora Twin, instead of a fuller album release a stripped back more acoustic/piano version. Maybe after Ixora Copeland needs to do an alternate release for all their albums!
Oh I agree it sounds fantastic, I was really pleased except for that one part of Night Figures, and using the beats got me what I wanted there haha. I guess I was more trying to highlight how different the experiences were rather than one being better than the other.
