I do love the idea in this film that all hell is breaking out outside the walls of the Sistine Chapel, but you barely feel it because you the viewer are sequestered along with the Cardinals.

Modern movies are generally bad at showing how smartphones impact our daily lives but this film does accurately convey how people will hit the vape at the most inopportune times.

This is how I felt. I think we probably should’ve spent more time with Benitez, but I loved that the whole movie they’re all positioning themselves as liberal vs conservative and then you get this massive reminder that they’re barely even liberal. I don’t disagree it was out of nowhere but it did still work for me. Possibly because it felt like getting the last laugh as a queer person with Catholic trauma

I do wish there was more than 10 minutes left once we get the reveal, but I kind of like that it came out of nowhere. I know a few Catholics personally that are going to go see this and be mad at the end and that makes me a little happy.

Really weird movie in that I loved this and would've easily watched another hour of it, but it also feels like a complete "nothing" of a movie.

Also weird that that i keep seeing it referred to "a mystery" but it's kind of just a series of reveals. I was never trying to figure anything out.

  8. It felt a lot like a murder mystery to me in its structure, even though it obviously isn't one. Just the way that each candidate gets "investigated"/vetted and has a secret come out about them.

The most off things for me was the portrayal of the Italian Cardinal as A) a traditionalist—there are no Italian trads, most are moderate/moderate liberal B) the conflation of Trad=asshole; as someone who follows the Vatican beat closely and has met traditionalist Cardinals, they are NOT the way this film portrayed...it's usually the large political appointees—sec of state, finance, or large metropolitan archbishops who schmooze with politicians that get the big head, and C) The notion that an actual trad would be a force to contend with in a papal election. No way, no how.

Also, the handling of the "In Pectore" cardinal is incorrect; if the Pope dies before announcing the Cardinal, then the appointment ceases and he cannot participate in Conclave. That early on kinda broke the fantasy for me.

This is about Carlos Diehz who played Benítez. What an inspiring story. I assumed he was an accomplished Mexican actor that I hadn’t come across yet.

This was not something I would typically have watched in a million years, but my mom really wanted to see it and was so excited when she found out I had Peacock lol.

It was great. Wow. Glad I watched.

This was good with kind of a kooky ending. Great atmosphere and overall mood throughout—really enjoyed the use of color.
