I've made a point to buy more recently and love it.

moving 3 years ago was able to go through my old ones and got hooked. I love buying vinyl but some of these shipping costs with one are getting out of hand.

I want to alphabetize this on a spiritual level

  3. idk how to feel about them being horizontal like that. On the one hand, it makes it easier to read them, which is useful when browsing at like Goodwill or a used book store. On the other hand, it's so aesthetically displeasing. But I mean, I get it, when I'm running out of space, I put books/CDs/DVDs on top of each other too. There's just always a layer of vertical ones first tho

Hahaha yeah it’s a space thing for sure, my extensive DVD/blu-ray collection got the vertically shelving priority.

Someday when I upgrade in space, they will be alphabetized and un-squashed.

  5. My CDs are by and large still in the CD wallets I had in HS/College, but I have now retrieved all of the cases from my parents' house and I'm gonna be spending some time reuniting discs with their cases (and ripping things at decent quality).

    No Fun. Not Ever.

I've gotten rid of the ton over time, but this is where I'm at. Haven't bought one in years.

Great thread. I’ve been collecting CDs for about 15 years and I love it. Nothing beats digging through a thrift store or the used section of a record store and finding absolute gold.

My wife and I actually stumbled upon a CD shelf at an estate sale for $10 a few weeks ago. Excellent investment

This also doesn’t even scratch the surface of my collection. I have another shelf nearby with more CDs and the rest of my collection is up at my mom’s place in my hometown. I’ll need to get them all sometime…

I had this thought this morning:

when did the CD era end? I got that Anberlin record and noticed the mix was pretty compressed and felt like cities, having came out in 2007, was probably being mixed and mastered more to be listened to on an IPod at the time. I bet a lot of us were born around the advent of the CD, but what year was the last year that people were making records specifically to be heard on CD? 2003? 2004?

  15. I still have a CD book full, and also a couple spindles full of other burned CDs. And I have a couple hundred non-burned CDs on my shelf. I still buy them as a more affordable alternative to vinyl. Like if it's an album I really like, but don't *need* to own it on vinyl, I go for the CD.

  16. iTunes launched in 2003 and got crazy big around 2004, so that seems right to me.

Also, will post pics of my CD collection later today.

The mass adoption of digital being the preferred format to CD feels a tad later than that. Maybe 2006? Even early iTunes and Limewire were just people burning stuff back to CD.

  18. ahhh, Kazaa and Limewire... i had unknowingly burned Say It Like You Mean It and Leaving Through the Window with the With Hopes of Starting Over and Audioboxer versions of some of the songs. good times...

Looking at getting the deluxe of They’re Only Chasing Safety and wow it’s so pricey

I think I was whenever dark is the way by anberlin came out. I had moved to vinyl by that point but I think I was out on CD’s all together by then

CDs had a bit of a spike in popularity here around 2007/2008. I think that lasted until about 2012 then they just sort of petered out.

Gave all my CDs to a charity shop about 10 years ago. I'm desperately hoping there's never a resurgence haha.

I pretty much only buy CDs now if it’s a band from my youth’s new album, like MCS or Yellowcard.

Once in a while I’ll pick up one from a thrift store that I used to own and lost at some point.
