We have an active vinyl thread, but we are the few and proud: the CD collectors!

I used to collect them back in the day like most of us did and I have a big vinyl collection, but recently started getting back into CD’s. Those 90’s/2000’s albums just aren’t hitting the same way on vinyl sometimes.

so let us discuss the COMPACT DISC

    favorite CD’s you have?
    Number of CD’s?
Special Japanese editions with bonus tracks?
    Etc.

I love this as a thread! I've actually never gotten rid of any of my old CDs, so I think I probably have upwards of 2,000 (compared to around 1,200 records). I haven't bought many older releases on CD in years because I was getting them on vinyl, but I never stopped buying new releases on CD.

Damn 2k! You’ve probably got so many hidden gems that aren’t even on streaming. That’s been my way back into them. That and I found a 5 CD disc changer at good will for 10 bucks.

    What you playing them on?

I recently purchased a Sony five disc changer through Facebook Marketplace. it's been awesome having that as an option now, along with my record player/vinyl.

I regrettably sold most of my CDs in 2021, but during the last year have been re-buying most of them. Almost back up to parity with the old collection!

  9. if i already have an album on cd i don't usually get it on vinyl unless it's one of my absolute favorite artists
if i already have an artist's album(s) on cd i don't usually get subsequent albums on vinyl unless it's one of my absolute favorite artists
if i want to check out an artist i usually get their stuff on cd first unless it's Urban Outfitters' extra 40% off clearance vinyl
i recently bought a $40 cd player to bring with me in the car bc it has usb charging and built in radio transmitter. my car is so old the radio doesn't have a cd player
i have two of these full of jewel cases and about a single shelf full of digipaks

About once a month I think about selling all of my records and replacing them with CDs.

one of the people who works at my local record shop did this recently and he says it’s the best decision he’s ever made. Less space, no getting up to turn the record over. Depending on the album, better audio quality

I definitely prefer CDs over vinyl for the above reasons. In saying that, I have about 20 records that are my all time fave albums and they look great with HQ artwork etc

Awesome thread idea. I still have a majority of my CDs. All early 00's rock/metal. Got rid of the jewel cases but kept the discs and booklets.

Yeah I think its proved obvious since I’ve started collecting them again, that they just sound better for a certain era of music because similar to vinyl from the 50-80’s, music was meant to be listened to on this format

I got rid of a lot of my collection, but over the last 3 years or so I've been building it up. I prefer CD to vinyl by a longshot and have started buying CD's of new releases.

One of my favourite special editions. I remember buying this on release day 25 years ago. A top 3 album for me.

I think labels/artists/bands could be more creative with CDs and the packaging compared to vinyl. There was nothing quite like popping the headphones in and flipping through a lyric booklet.

I was lucky enough to grow up with CDs being popular and the artwork, thickness of the booklet, jewel case/digipack all influenced the music heavily for me. I wish CDs weren’t largely viewed as an afterthought these days.

    Did someone say CDs?

I’ve never counted and I purge here and there (to make room that I don’t have) but i would guess I’ve owned around 3000 CDs at one point and that includes EPs and singles as well as full length albums.

Gosh I have tons of CDs but I don't remember the last time I personally played them. About half of them must be at my brother's place as he and his girlfriend have a proper setup and still listen to CDs all the time in their house or in their cars. I sometimes gift stuff I think would be up their alley for Xmas or their birthdays. It feels more tangible and real than endlessly sharing a playlist or YouTube and Spotify links.

I occasionally still buy new ones when I pre-order upcoming releases (if CDs are pressed, which aren't always the case), or used ones when I stumble upon all time favorites at record shops, with the latest finds being Disambiguation by Underoath and A City By The Light Divided by Thursday. During recent years, I also switched to buying more from K-Pop acts, but I had to cut down on that habit due to the costs and a lack of interest, even though the packaging is often A+. Wish it was more often the case for Western acts, but I have no idea how much you can do with a smaller budget. Now I'm more interested in buying stuff from small and local artists I see live etc.

I'd love to get everything in order and take pics of my collection further down the line, I don't even know where to start lol

I still have about 2,000 CDs or so (plus about 300 LPs, though I'm looking to cut down), but for space reasons I ditched almost all of the packaging for at least 95% of them and put the discs in giant alphabetized wallets. (It's not like they have any resale value anyway - that could change I guess, but I'm not holding my breath and I don't make decisions based on that kind of consideration for the most part.) Where possible I kept the album booklets in there as well if they've got some substance. Box sets / fancier editions got to keep their packaging.

It makes browsing a strange experience at times but I've gotten used to it. I just don't have the space, plus I will inevitably need to move at some point and the wallets are way easier to deal with in that sense.

I still check thrift stores for CDs a couple times a year. On my last visit to a Salvation Army I spotted Cass McCombs' Big Wheel and Others, Emmylou Harris' Wrecking Ball and Kruder and Dorfmeister's K&D Sessions for 2 bucks CAD each. Not bad!

I've got a Yamaha S303 single disc player I added to my hi-fi setup (Peachtree Decco125 amp, and a set of Martin Logan Motion 35s) a few years ago. It's a pretty basic player, but it definitely gets the job done.

This is most of my collection. Not home at the moment but I’ll try to remember to post some highlights when I return.
