Does anyone have any recommendations for some of the best series to come out of DC Rebirth? I've never really read comics outside of trade paperbacks before but I've started a subscription for Batman, All-Star Batman, Batman Beyond, Teen Titans, Doom Patrol and Trinity. Hopefully I can catch up on all the others ones I've considered eventually (Green Arrow, The Flash, Wonder Woman, Justice League, Nightwing) but I've only got enough to sub for one or two more at the moment.
Detective is good. I've actually liked it more than what I read of Batman (though All-Star is already better than both). The focus on Batwoman is great. I also liked Batgirl's first issue a lot, though she's my favorite DC character. (I didn't like Batgirl & the Birds of Prey.) Justice League is cool; I think it's a lot of big fun. I've also really liked Green Lanterns, in spite of unappealing art, because the leads are both great, especially Jessica Cruz.
Me too! The art is so great, reminds me of Stephen Collins art in The Gigantic Beard That Was Evil and I loved Bunn's writing in Night of the Living Deadpool. Stoked! Can't decide whether I want to read this as my first Morrison or Batman: Black Glove.
Exclusive: Marvel's New Iron Man Will Be Known As...Ironheart! I'm glad they came up with a good gender-neutral name for her (but are still letting her series be called "Invincible Iron Man"). I don't currently plan on having either this or Infamous Iron Man on my pull 'cause there are endless titles vying for my attention, but I'm really excited to eventually read 'em nonetheless.
Finished Secret Wars yesterday, didn't read every tie-in as compiled by MU, just the ones that interested me (Star Lord & Kitty Pryde ) and I really really loved the ending. Especially it all coming full circle with Reed, who was a character I never cared much for but this made me appreciate him a lot more.
I read Carnage and Rocket Raccoon and Groot so far fro my stack. Carnage was pretty good start, interested to see where they take him. Although, Rocket Raccoon and Groot was kinda disappointing to start.
EXCLUSIVE: Walker Explains "Occupy Avengers'" Real-World Ties, Reveals First Team Member Looks like a really cool series, regardless of dated name. I dig the creative team and premise, and I'm all about street level Hawkeye heroism. Cool that the second confirmed member is Red Wolf, who I've spent no time with but who seems like a neat character. I'm sure the rest of the team will be similarly rad. Also, finally caught up on Black Widow. Such an excellent series. Samnee's art and the character of Natasha are the perfect pairing.
Ok folks, I need some help/advice. I took a break from Marvel stuff a while back and want to know what's worth reading to catch up to present day. I think the last stuff I read was right around the end of Fear Itself. What events or runs from then until now are can't miss?
For big event stuff, just go with the whole Avengers/New Avengers epic by Hickman, which includes the event Infinity and culminates in the event Secret Wars. You'll probably have to Google a good reading list. It's a lengthy epic, but it's very good and worth the time. Outside of big events, here's what I think is most "essential"/really good reading: -Hawkeye by Matt Fraction -Ms Marvel by G. Willow Wilson -Miles Morales Ultimate Spider-Man by Brian Michael Bendis -Silver Surfer by Dan Slott and Mike Allred My favorite current titles are Ms Marvel, Silver Surfer, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Black Widow, Mighty Thor, Black Panther, and Scarlet Witch. There are a lot of cool new titles coming up in the fall, including a Jessica Jones series by the Alias team of Bendis and Michael Gaydos. If you miss the Peter/MJ marriage as much as I do, you'll also probably be interested in the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows series by Gerry Conway, which continues an alternate timeline story started in a miniseries of the same name last year by Dan Slott.
Awesome, thanks. Has X-Men stuff been that lackluster that you didn't include any or do you just not read it? The Ultimate imprint is done now and Miles is in 616, correct?
Just finished Southern Bastards volume 3. I enjoyed it but am super disappointed it was more set up for something to come then actually things happening. I still love the series and will stick with it but I was hoping volume 2 was the set up and am a little wary that they are going to do more of it in volume 4.
Did you read the "Wolverine and the X-Men" series by Jason Aaron and Chris Bachalo (and other artists) yet? I haven't yet but have heard it was great; I recently bought the first few trades. Thoughts on material since then, including Bendis' Uncanny and All-New X-Men titles before Secret Wars and Lemire's Extraordinary X-Men afterwards through now, vary widely. The general consensus is that the X titles have been weak for years, but there are also some people who really enjoy things here and there. I did enjoy Greg Pak's Storm series before Secret Wars and thought the first arc of the current All-New Wolverine series (starring Laura, formerly X-23) was excellent. Correct. Hickman's Avengers "Time Runs Out" arc into Secret Wars destroyed the multiverse, and while the aftermath of Secret Wars restored the multiverse, 1610 remains gone, with Miles and his supporting cast now in 616 Marvel (in "Spider-Man," while Peter Parker continues his adventures in "Amazing Spider-Man"). The evil Ultimate Reed Richards, the Maker, also made it to 616 and is in I think one of the Avengers books, though I don't know which one.
I haven't read that yet, I think it started right after I took a break, but I love Jason Aaron, so I'm looking forward to it. Ah, ok, I knew Miles moved over, but I didn't realize it happened during a big event like that. Cool.
Oooooh at first I really didn't have high hopes for this series, even though there wasn't really any info about it the name just rubbed me the wrong way. But that interview just made it one of my most anticipated of Marvel NOW.
Read Black Magick Vol #1 and man that was great! Nicola Scott is becoming one of my favorite artists and the use of minimal color in this book was phenomenal! I'm not usually a fan of b/w comics but this one was different. Just hope that there is another arc because that tease seems fantastic!
Really enjoyed this, too! Had a review copy of it, but now I'm bummed that I don't have it anymore since they expire and disappear after a set amount of days.
What's everyone picking up this week? I grabbed Hellblazer #1 since I'm reviewing it at Talking Comics, Blue Beetle: Rebirth, and grabbed Batgirl/Robin Year One since my store had 30% off on almost everything.
Snotgirl was good. This is going to continue to be a really fun and interesting series. Lottie is the best. I love, love, love that Jubilee is in Patsy Walker aka Hellcat. I can't for the life of me decide if I like this Batgirl series just because it's Batgirl, or because it's actually well done. (Granted, I didn't like and am not following Batgirl and the Birds of Prey.) I am having fun with it, though. This was a really good issue of Detective Comics. The scenes with Batman and Batwoman were really good, and I loved the ending with Red Robin. I picked up the first couple issues of Black Hammer because a podcast spoke really highly of it. I liked them a lot, but I'm not sure yet if I'll add it to my pull or catch up down the road. Regardless, a cool series.
