Oh man that glimpse at Red Dawn was crazy. Jessica Cruz is quickly becoming a favorite hero of mine, the way she deals with anxiety and fear is spectacular.
How does Runaways fair in terms of Brian K Vaughn's other stuff? I liked his Doctor Strange story, but didn't love it (need to reread it though).
Supergirl was ok. I'm more interested in the way the art looks on the cover of #1 than in the Rebirth story. And I'm not going to lie, I'm having a lot of fun with Harley Quinn killing zombies.
It introduced a ton of new characters to the Marvel universe, a few of which are in decent use today. Gert
So I read the 3 Runaways volumes, and last time I saw any of the characters was Avengers Arena, who's popped up lately?
Nico is part of A-Force. Molly was in the Secret Wars book. I think Arena was the last time I saw any others.
Really can't wait for this trade. I read the first issue of Plutona and wasn't as enticed to read that as this.
I should remember how good Mighty Thor is, since I've been reading it for about a year, but I keep forgetting and learning all over again every month. I hope Aaron and Dauterman stay together on here for a long time. Also read Spider-Woman, Green Lanterns, and Justice League. Good stuff. I dread Rodriguez leaving Spider-Woman. I wish Green Lanterns had significantly better art so I wouldn't have to choke this down for these characters. I still don't understand why people think Justice League is disappointing. Got Black Widow and All-New Wolverine, too, but behind on them. Oh, and I also finally read The Fix #3-4 and Kill or Be Killed #1 the other day. Kill or Be Killed is super fascinating and awesome; I've never jumped into a Brubaker title at the beginning, so I look forward to following this character's dark journey every month. The Fix is crazy and ridiculous.
Omg that first volume of Paper Girls was heaven. Reminds me a bit of Stranger Things. As far as new issues... Loving the conflict in Aquaman, Suicide Squad is awesome, Harley is totally wearing a shirt that says "Rebirth". There's also a reference to Harley playing Pokemon Go in both SS and her solo story, got a good chuckle out of me. There's a short Deadshot story at the end that's great, a bit of an origin somewhat similar to what they did in the movie. Nightwing was cool, mainly because of Babs, who I'm just starting notice has the best "OH SHIT" face ever. Birds of Prey was solid. Justice League was great, the Kindred are pretty interesting thus far. Batman was amazing. The Gotham payoff was spectacular. Looks like next issue is Gotham Girl Year One so that should be interesting. Question for the end of Batman since the pronouns are confusing me... In Gotham Girls monologue at the end she says "after we were married..." is she talking about Bruce or Duke? And then she says "After I killed him" is she talking about her brother at that moment or is this like a hint of the future where she's saying she killed Batman?
I'm becoming increasingly excited for Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows this October. The Secret Wars mini made me so happy, so more of that status quo written by classic Spider-Man writer Gerry Conway sounds perfect to me. I'm not in love with Ryan Stegman and would prefer a return of Andy Kubert, but I also don't hate Stegman; the above page in process looks cool. Man, I'll rabble about this 'til I die, but I can't for the life of me see the appeal of returning to young Peter, like in the "Spidey" comic and upcoming film. Give me family man Peter forever. For real.
So my library run this week resulted in an eclectic mix of selections. Since I'm new to comics, I try to pull recommendations from various places, this thread included. Ended up with: Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Vol. 1 - was a little quirky and hip for me, but it went really fast so it must have been strangely entertaining in a way. It's obviously nothing like the comics I read as a kid, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. X-men: The Dark Phoenix Saga - halfway through this, loving it. This hits home for me as more of a traditional read. Not a fan of Dazzler, but everything else has been cool as hell so far. Darth Vader Vol. 1 - as a huge Star Wars fan, I'm sure I'll enjoy this. Saving it for last since I've heard such good things. Then it's back to the library, hoping Runaways and Planet Hulk have been turned back in!
Be sure to check out the first page of the thread. Great stuff there. Also always looking to add stuff to the first page!
find World War Hulk after Planet Hulk. I don't think it's as good (haven't read them in a while), but it's mostly just absurd nonstop action, so that's fun
Read Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Vol 1 last night. I didn't really care for it too much. I liked the art and everything and can see why people would enjoy it, it just didn't do much for me. I thought it was cool that there were footnotes at the bottom of every page but it kinda took me out of the story as well.
Yesterday's pick ups: Squirrel Girl Vol 2 Deadpool Vol 6 Rocket Raccoon and Groot Vol 1 All New All Different Avengers Vol 1 Carnage Vol 1
Just picked up Harrow County Vol 1, All Star Superman, and Gotham By Midnight Vol 1 for 17 bucks! If any of you live in NJ, check out Wildpig Comics in Kenilworth. They have a ton of stuff for like half off or more in the used section.
