As Disney cuts so many people off from their livelihoods (mainly in the Marvel Studios visual development department, but Marvel Comics staff was apparently also affected)… regular reminder from me that it’s important to support indie comics. A couple Kickstarters I’ve backed: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/newpain/the-forgotten-five https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/deathline/afterlife1 And, the above upcoming miniseries, Did You Hear About Mimi Green?, can still be requested at your local comic shop. Some other ones coming up, too, at Image & Ignition & Dark Horse & Oni Press & I think DSTLRY hopefully finally got their shit back on track, too?
speaking of indie, I've been buying some image/dark horse/boom stuff and I love their presentations. Really excited to jump into The Department of Truth, the art is great. I had already read Black Science, Descender, and Saga is the past but was glad to finally have some hardcover deluxe editions.
Oh shit. I’m not ready to mourn his loss of that position per se, since I haven’t exactly been happy with a lot of the current environment at Marvel. But, I cannot see someone that important to publishing getting fired, as part of such a massive wave of layoffs within the company, as a good sign. (Things certainly didn’t get better in the restructuring that got rid of actual supervillain Ike Perlmutter! And Gabriel absolutely wasn’t that kinda villain.)
In more depressing comic news, Adam Hughes has cancer: https://www.adamhughesofficial.com/post/in-other-news Wishing him as full a recovery as possible. If I’m being honest, I don’t feel as strongly about all his work, but like. His best covers are gorgeous. Such good expressions and textures.
went to a comic shop for Supergirl Day freebies yesterday, didn't wanna leave without getting something so i picked up Grim vol 1. i've only read Steph's first three Harley volumes and her mini Red Before Black so far but i've been following her on socials and she seems cool. i don't really do Marvel single issues but if she's ever in town for a Daredevil signing i'm gonna try to be there
I have the first issue ordered. Haven’t read that much of Rosenberg’s stuff, but his last Image miniseries was great. And, I like the idea of this being a character-driven story meant to run long term, with weird robots.
Easy (but stupid) explanation. “Free Comic Book Day” was the IP of Diamond Distribution, which until COVID, was the sole distributor of all major comic book publishers. Diamond hit hard times and went bankrupt. DC and Marvel both took their business elsewhere to competitor distribution companies. When the dust settled, there were two competing distribution companies (Universal and Penguin). One (Universal) owned the Free Comic Book Day IP since it purchased Diamond’s asset, the other did not. The two couldn’t reach an agreement about FCBD so Penguin created their own version. FCBD by Universal has DC and Image and a few other indies. Comic Book Giveaway Day from Penguin has Marvel, Boom, Dark Horse, and IDW.
I gotcha. A bit annoying lol. I wonder if shops will limit picks for each event or do like 3-5 all together . Hoping it’s the former
Annoyed about the lack of horror in this years FCBD titles. I’ve already read Nice House on the Lake and Terrorbytes doesn’t look that appealing to me. I’ve read Locke & Key too
FCBD offerings rarely have value to me, tbh. There are occasionally decent ones, and back in 2016 one of them introduced me to the greatest comics of all time (Love and Rockets). But like. Most are inconsequential promo teasers and shit. Wish they were better.
I went to four stores for independent bookstore day and picked up five graphic novels, including two books by Nicole Goux and memoirs by ND Stevenson and Cecil Castelluci Plus RSD last week, FCBD next week? Busy busy
Started the Morrison run of Animal Man and it’s quite good. In the first few issues the hook for me was Buddy getting his arm ripped off by a rat man and detecting some earthworms under the concrete so he could take on their regeneration power and grow his arm back while he was bleeding out.
Sanrio, Sonic, & more coming soon Exclusive: IDW Publishing's Full July 2026 Solicits & Solicitations
i had a stack of old fcbd stuff; after this year's i finally got around to putting them in bag and board. i think i need a fourth short box...
started Alan Moore's Swamp Thing run and it's incredible. every panel has something that kind of blows me away visually. The writing is great as well. Doesn't feel like it was written 40 years ago.
