Worked my way through Mark Waid’s weekly Action Comics run. It was enjoyable, though it could have benefitted by being more spread out. Would have loved to have seen more time between Clark and Mon El.
I’m nearly caught up (or as close to caught up as I can be via the DC Infinite app) on Superman. Just finished issue 25. I think I’ve nailed down what irks me about modern superhero comics: we rarely spend time with the superheroes in their personal lives. The secret identities are basically non-existent. And for me, that was always part of the entertainment. I’m guessing the fall from 32 pages to 20 pages has a lot to do with it. Just not much real estate for anything but the heroics. I hope that changes soon.
the only current ongoing i've been following for that long is Birds of Prey and, yeah, i guess you're right, it would be nice to see Barbara, Dinah, and Cassandra just being regular people. We saw more of that with the Batgirls run, Cassandra and Stephanie having a lot of down time in between their adventures
I’ve got one more trade of the North FF run, and that’s the element the book really gets right to me. With every issue or two being its own story, the characters get a lot more focus issues and we see different pairings each time. I think it also helps that Alicia is the closest to being the main character and so her POV really emphasizes the human element of some of the wacky adventures of the FF along with the overall back to basics vibe of the book.
Catching up on some more DC. Si Spurrier’s Flash series is a trip. The writing and concepts can get a little out there, but overall it’s an enjoyable series. The family dynamic being front and center is a refreshing change of pace. Ridley’s Action Comics 3 parter was a nice story that really emphasized Clark’s drive for justice.
Oh, the Ram V series from Detective Comics. I haven’t had a chance to read it yet, but I love Ram V’s writing. And, basically every superhero comic reader I respect who’s read it loves it, lol. I’ve been hoping DC would announce a complete collection (I believe the run is 5 books).
I've read the first volume, and loved it. Granted, I'm a Ram V fan and will read anything he writes. It feels utterly gothic, which I've been missing in Batman stuff for quite some time.
I’ve read most of it. It’s a really poetic and epic story. I’m not sure if it really screams “Batman story” to me. But it’s well done. I’ll definitely finish it at some point soon.
Damn I never had sdcc fomo until it actually started reading comics. Idec about whatever MCU or DCCU panel they're having, I wanna meet some authors/artists and they're not gonna be at lacc! (Also I hate that I missed an in-store Tillie Walden signing a couple weeks back bc it was on the same day as my friend group's annual beach trip)
finally finished the new Zatanna miniseries, it's really good! i stopped after the second issue bc it felt pretty dense so i wanted to read all of it all at once. between this and the Mariko Tamaki Elseworlds miniseries last year, she's easily becoming one of my favorite characters to follow.
just got a big package of online orders and preorders yesterday. I'm loving the non-DC stuff i've been picking up. here's some recent and some not-so-recent series This Ends Tonight (sexy femme fatales) Blood Type (sexy vampires) Violent Flowers (sexy vampire lesbians) Lilith (sexy lesbians, one of whom is a vampire) Pinupocalypse (sexy lesbians vs zombies) The Mammoth (sexy lesbians, one of whom is a zombie) I Was a Fashion School Serial Killer (sexy lesbian students, one of whom is a serial killer) Red Before Black (sexy lesbian outlaws) Eros/Psyche (sexy lesbian witches) hmm i sense a recurring theme
