Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribić are reuniting for an… Aliens vs Avengers comic!?!? Absolutely wild that this is a real thing.
or maybe not so slowly. I picked up a couple at a store yesterday and this morning I just ordered the remaining seven Barbara books haha... Will obviously want the Steph and Cass runs as well but I'm gonna pump the breaks for a bit, actually (re)read these. Yes my wallet hates me now but I've had a rough couple weeks, this is retail therapy.
I'm rereading Gail Simone's Batgirl run and I just noticed she leaves for a few issues and then comes back. Speculation is DC fired her for wanting to make Alysia trans but then backtracked because of the backlash. wtf? Didn't a writer for Batwoman leave for wanting Kate to get gay married?
Kinda wild New 52 was only like 12 years ago. well anyway, there's this so I guess we've come a long way since then
This Saturday is Free Comic Book Day! Home Page This is the first FCBD where I’m the employee of a comic shop… which ironically means it’s the first in years I’ll be missing, because I’ve been doing a project in their warehouse, lol. But, I’m gonna make sure I get some of the free promotional comics put aside for me. The ones I want: ~ Blood Hunt / X-Men (Marvel) - The X-Men part will be the first look at Gail Simone & David Marquez’s Uncanny X-Men and will focus on Jubilee, so… of course I need it. ~ Stories From the Atlas Comics Library (Fantagraphics/Marvel) - Reprints of some 1950s pre-Code comics by some Golden Age greats??? Yes please. Probably the best free book being released this year. ~ Dying Inside (Vault) - This one is a preview of a graphic novel about mental health co-written by Pete Wentz. But, the real reason I want it is that what’s been shown of Lisa Sterle’s art is quite nice, imo. ~ Monster High (IDW) - Idk, it looks cute, and I like cute things! lol. Siobhan Keenan is doing the art, so I know it’ll be pretty. Lots of other promotional offerings this year some of y’all may be into. (But remember, different shops have different policies in what they’ll give you. And, the shops have to pay for the free comics, so buy something while you’re there!)
wish i could but i'm sick anyway, i looked into the Steph and Cass runs of Batgirl and (affordable) tpb are actually very difficult to find ahh Welp, at least I have all of Babs.
I’m too busy working for a comic shop today to fully take advantage of supporting a comic shop, but I’m a true blue Wednesday warrior, so whatever, lol. I did grab four books at the start of my shift. And then the last issue I needed of Glory vol 1 was in the boxes of comics I’m working with today, so I put that aside for myself. (I also took some time on the clock to read that Gail Simone & David Marquez X-Men prelude story, and it confirmed what I suspected: They’re a fantastic creative team for that property.)
I have a very specific (and potentially embarrassing) question that I'm hoping someone in here knows the answer to. I found Gerard Way's Fabulous Killjoys in a bookstore and bought it on a whim. I really liked it and now I want to read all of Gerard's comics specifically I already have both versions of Killjoys and I bought the box set of Umbrella Academy so now I want to get his Doom Patrol collection too. However, I'm seeing online that it very much relies on you being familiar with the characters for it to make sense, which I am very much not. Would I be okay watching the TV show and then reading it? Will it give me enough context? Like I said, extremely specific question lol
I haven’t watched the show, so I can’t say, but maybe? I think more so, I’d recommend reading Grant Morrison’s Doom Patrol run beforehand. They’re a great writer; Way is a big fan, to the point where he cast them in MCR’s Killjoys videos. Their Doom Patrol is collected in three big volumes. There’s also a miniseries about Flex Mentallo, drawn by the brilliant Frank Quitely. It’s all cool comics that’ll give you context for the kinda creative Gerard Way is. Like, what inspired him and his sensibilities. Btw, there’s a new Way comic launching next month, Paranoid Gardens, that seems very rad, if that wasn’t already on your radar.
I haven't read them yet but I've somehow accumulated about half of the titles under Gerard Way's Young Animal DC imprint
Man, invincible has really reinvigorated my love for comics. It's so good. Just got to Mark and Cecil's falling out, Mark and Eve finally getting together. About to start Cecil's backstory. I have been doing nothing but reading from the time I get home from work until bed haha it's not healthy
Mannn Invincible was such a fantastic series to read. Great stuff all the way through. I think it might be my favorite comic series. Can't decide between it and Ultimate Spider-Man. Bummed I'm done with it, I've been thinking about it a lot since I finished
I have my tentative picks for which “from the ashes” books I wanna follow (Exceptional, X-Factor, & Phoenix are I think my frontrunners)… But Storm and Dazzler are both characters whose solo books have a very high chance of becoming must reads, depending on creative team.
From what I’ve seen, Jason Loo is a real cool dude, so I’m happy for him. Also, of the ten confirmed “From the Ashes” books, four are confirmed to have non-white writers (and Storm’s almost certainly a fifth one, making it half). Only three are helmed by white men, which is a neat change from much of Krakoa, and much of Marvel. Also, glad Dazzler is a 4-issue mini I can trade wait, because it makes my pull list choices a lil easier, lol.
Murewa Ayodele and Lucas Werneck. I’m definitely reading this one monthly for as long as it lasts, which is hopefully a decently long time.
