RIP to a brilliant illustrator. I only have one Valérian and Laureline book, but what I’ve seen of his cartooning and design work is gorgeous.
Dropped Saga three arcs before the hiatus, never got around to revisiting any of it or reading any issues I missed, still gonna read #55 this week. Ready to jump back into this world I haven’t been in for years and just vibe.
Really loving Batgirl of Burnside so far, just wanted to pop in and say it's hilarious that Babs recognized Grayson's ass
Finished! As much as I love Gail Simone's run, I really enjoy the lighter tone of Burnside, and the all-girl team-ups are so cool. I just wish Alysia was still a central character, but I do love that she got gay married.
I’ve been reading through all the New Batman stuff with Jace Fox and I really like him, but with everything else around him it feels like DC is just setting this character up for failure from the start. First off, I know the plan changed with 5G but it’s much harder to care when Bruce is still around as the main Batman. Then it’s really tied into the N52 Batwing continuity which was so long ago and so niche it’s strange that there’s not a clean slate. Similarly it’s so tied to the current Batman stuff that if you wanted to pick up this cold, it would be almost impossible. The biggest issue though is his entire family is either severely underwritten or completely insufferable. His parents are awful and entitled. Batwing is just a jerk. And his sisters are barely in it. They even made Renee Montoya a shell of herself. I can’t blame the writer because all of these are higher up editorial and overarching story issues, but it stinks that a solid character is gonna fall by the wayside because of it. With a new city, I’m hoping it will improve, but that’s a big change 14 issues into the character to fix.
It’s really weird that Bruce hasn’t done anything about it, he did finally address it recently and said it was a problem for the future, so presumably a clash is coming, and he’ll be welcomed into the batfamily or not. the best stuff from Jace was the Future State stuff
This is a long shot, but would any of you know any sites that ship new Marvel comics internationally? I’m guessing most would require a minimum purchase of a handful of comics in order to do so. I’ve searched around Taipei but I can’t find any stores that get new releases.
Batman Swallowing His Own Cape: The Modern Caped Crusader's Narrative Autocannibalism - Comic Book Herald This Batman essay, which touches on Grant Morrison and Jace Fox and Fear State and Tom King and some movie stuff and whatnot, is very good. If like Batman, and/or have been thinking about the state of Batman comics, you should read this take, imo.
DCBS offers international shipping but there's a chance it's pretty pricey. Discount Comic Book Service - Comics, trade paperbacks and collectibles
At the risk of sounding old, can someone explain how this Substack stuff works? I know what’s going on but I’m really struggling to find out how people are meant to read the stuff
The Avengers, X-Men, And Eternals Face Judgment Day Look at me, excited to put a Big Marvel Comics Crossover Event Miniseries on my pull list in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-two.
RIP Brian Augustyn. Long time editor & writer who wrote Batman: Gotham by Gaslight and edited Wally West Flash (bringing in Mark Waid and occasionally co-writing with him).
Substack teamed up with the Panels app too. So if the creators provide those links, it'll import right into the app. Some have just been in the emails themselves and you scroll to read. I definitely prefer the download/Panels option though.
While I wait for the next batches of Batgirl and Spider-Gwen to arrive at my library, I've started reading Silk. I liked her in the Spider-Women crossover but I'm kind of hoping her series will highlight her Asian-ness more Speaking of which, what are some good Cassandra Cain comics? Is Batgirl Vol 1&2 really her only solo series?
Tynion had a good Rebirth era Detective Comics arc that was all about her, Volume 3: League of Shadow. All of Tynion's Rebirth era Detective Comics are fantastics and focus on the whole team, with a lot of Batwoman. It has one of my favorite single issues I've ever read, I think it was called Batwoman Beyond, but either way that was what the gimmick was, I can't remember the specific issue. The whole run does a really great job of showing the differences between Batman and Batwoman's fight.
Thanks! And it’s a subscription per creator right? If I wanted to read Hickman and Tynion that requires two separate monthly subs right? It’s not like a Netflix thing
Correct! I went for the yearly subs for Tynion and Snyder since everything is coming out in installments anyway for Tynion and Snyder is a monthly class that spans a full year.
