  1. @Henry I finished Elegy. You were right. This was so good. The writing is great, the way it addresses Kate's sexuality. The art style is incredible, especially the way the panels are divided. A+ recommendation

Got 90s classic WildC.A.T.S. #11 out of a dollar box the other day, and it’s actually pretty fabulous.

Written by Chris Claremont, penciled by Jim Lee, inked by Scott Williams, and letter by Tom Orzechowski. Part two of a four-part story where Jim Lee, knowing he was gonna step off the book he created, reunited with Claremont to I guess get some story beats out of his system? I dunno, I can’t say the plot is what I liked about the issue.

Few things in the history of comics hit as good as Claremont’s words in Orzechowski’s handwriting coming out of the mouth of a magnificent woman. And, coming not long after Claremont’s long tenure with the X-Men ended, this Tapestry villain (who’s somehow tied to Zealot or whatever) really hits that spot for me.

I can hear this in the voice of Cerebro podcast host Conor Goldsmith without trying, which is the clearest sign to me that it’s good Claremont, lol.

go back 6 months and I was all in on Donny Cates and his weird ass shenanigans. Now? I can’t really stand his writing anymore. The latest issue of Thor was just bad. I hate this storyline. It’s a boring re-tread of old ideas mashed with Cates’s signature universe level doomsday crap. Hulk? Less said about that the better.

Damn, that would be awesome. Beyond has been surprisingly good. But Hickman Spidey? Sign me up.

Is his Hulk bad compared to Immortal Hulk, or is it just… bad?

Honestly, I think it’s just bad. The premise is very dumb.

heres what’s coming in issue 6

“This new threat is basically the Hulk’s Knull, but just like Donny and Ryan’s run on HULK overall, it’s crazier and more dangerous than you can imagine,” Editor Wil Moss

This literally just happened in Immortal Hulk. He’s basically thrown that run completely out the window unlike Ram V and Ewing who are building directly upon his Venom run.

That's so weird. I thought the backstory to Ewing and Cates basically trading books was each of them loving what the other was doing, finding out the other felt the same, and then both of them walking up to CB or whoever to pitch them taking over from each other.

Maybe the problem is that Cates only has so many good stories in him and has fallen back on "let's play with some toys I like and break some shit!" Which, is a bummer 'cause he was so exciting for a minute there. I'm still disappointed Crossover didn't work for me at all.

Speaking of Venom, I can't decide how into this new run I am. I love all the creators involved, but something just hasn't quite clicked yet. As much as I dig Hitch's big, epic stuff and think he's a good fit for Ewing's cosmic ideas, I think it's been a more inconsistent fit for the Dylan Brock side. Almost wish a Mark Bagley type were drawing some of those pages, to make me connect more to the kid on an emotional level; if you kept the same colorist, don't think the contrasting styles would clash to much.

I will say, where the V/Hitch parts succeed is making symbiotes scary, in a way that almost reminds me of that Conway/Perkins Carnage series. So, I'm willing to stick around a little bit more to see if it all finally clicks into place for me.

How good the Ram V Carnage series looks, and how consistently connected they are, will be a big factor. If they're so interlocked that I feel like I need both or neither on my pull, I might pick neither, lol, so I have more room for other titles. But, if I think I can stick with just one (until they inevitably cross paths), and the first Carnage issue grabs me enough, might go with that over Venom. Ewing rules (his X-Men Red with Storm, Magneto, and Sunspot on Mars looks great), but I might be more interested in what Ram will do with the Carnage symbiote? Especially since his story in Carnage: Black, White, & Blood was probably the best one.

I’m not sure about any background to it but Cates has basically thrown and Banner character development and growth between him and Hulk out the window. He may pull it around but yeah it’s the opposite of what you’d expect to follow Immortal.

then again, is that better or worse than his Thor which is just a shitty retread of old stories with nothing really happening.

This is a nice little thread about the best comic I read in 2021, which you’re about to be able to own as a trade paperback if that’s your thing.

Amazing Spider-Man is gonna be good again, let’s go!

Not surprised in retrospect that the Hickman rumor wasn’t true, since the reason he left X-Men was that he’s paid too much to just keep writing a regular monthly book. Only way that’d happen is if he wrote an event miniseries, and then ended up assembling a new writer committee. Definitely expecting him to get Marvel’s cosmic stuff now.

I loved the idea of it being Zeb Wells but was leaning towards it not being someone from the Beyond committee. Very happy it is, indeed, him, and curious how this storyline feeds into that relaunch.

Primordial is getting to be real tough read for an animal lover. It's spectacular, but definitely darkens my day.

Also Department of Truth finally doing their Mothman issue, it's perfect. One page turn in particular was the comic book equivalent of a jump scare.

Finally had a chance to catch up and read Fear State and was really unimpressed. For having so many tie ins and extra issues, it felt very boring and simplistic. I don’t know if Tynion leaving rushed it too much, but outside of maybe Miracle Molly, there’s nothing from his run that I hope sticks around going forward.

  25. Harleen is so good it hurts. Like, seeing her be manipulated into falling for him is just so heartbreaking. And yes, the art is great. I think the best part, though, is that it's narrated by Harley herself, in retrospect. Their relationship isn't romanticized or glorified. On another note, I didn't expect it to lean so heavily into Two-Face's origin story, but I appreciate the parallels it highlights between Harvey and Harley.
