Newburn #1 was really good. New crime series at Image, written by Chip Zdarsky and drawn by Jacob Phillips. About an ex-cop private investigator who’s on retainer for all the city’s major crime families. Has a backup written by Nadia Shammas and written by Ziyed Yusuf Ayoub. (And, first issue had a Tula Lotay variant if you’re into that, though I’m sticking with main covers.) If you’re into crime comics, especially those by Ed Brubaker and Jacob’s dad Sean Phillips (who Jacob colors these days), or Chip’s other work, definitely recommend it.
Love Chip, Brubaker and both Phillips. Sounds right up my alley. Human Target #1 was enjoyable. It’s Tom King, doing Tom King things.
Thanks for posting I had kinda forgot it was out today. I missed final order cutoff at my local, but I’m gonna try to snag it at one of the shops I like to visit in Asheville this weekend. I preordered it via an online pull, but it takes like a month and I’m wanting to read it asap. Glad to hear it’s solid!
Ram V's Swamp Thing is getting really good Also Cullen Bunn's Lucky Devil. Bunn really doesn't stop coming up with great new horror series, though this is funnier than he usually is. @Colby Searcy I think you'd dig.
I'll have to look into this! I'm still a few issues behind on Swamp Thing but I like it but also have no clue what's going on.
Finished Gail Simone's Batgirl run. Some bits were a little strange here and there but for the most part I loved it, in no small part thanks to the relationship between Barbara and Alysia. I am looking forward to what looks like a lighter tone in the Burnside run, though. On to Spider-Gwen next. I've found that I prefer physical, so I've placed holds and gotta wait until they arrive at my local library branch.
Okay, so, a few months ago I was at a library waiting for a friend so I read Spider-Gwen vol. 1 on a whim because I thought that was the beginning--it wasn't. It actually starts with vol. 0. Today, I picked up vols. 1-3 and 5, started vol. 2 thinking it was a direct continuation--it wasn't. Issues 7-8 are actually collected in Spider-Women. So now, I've placed holds for Spider-Women and Spider-Man/Spider-Gwen Sitting in a Tree, and I'm just waiting for the other half of the series to get here so I can properly start this thing. And as I'm writing this, an hour after getting home from the library, I get a notification that issues 4 and 6 have arrived. Ahhh hahaha
So Williamson is the new Batman writer? Sounds good to me. Thought it might be Tom Taylor. Now that DC has Chip doing work that would be like the dream.
That makes sense, they usually make a big deal about a new writer in their comic ads, and on this one it just mentions a 4 issue arc.
Yep! I was planning to add it to my pull but think I'm gonna wait to see who the permanent writer is going to be first. Absolutely love Josh though!
Finally got around to finishing this and yeah, it was amazing. Still don't think it's quite his best, my top three comics are all him though lol, but the ending really shot it up for me. The art was obviously fantastic throughout and I loved the world they built.
The new Venom #1 was exactly what you’d expect a new Venom series by Immortal Hulk’s Al Ewing, The Swamp Thing’s Ram V, and The Ultimates’ Bryan Hitch would be. In a good way, imo, but I’d personally call that thick first issue of sci-fi horror more “interesting” than “fun.” Regardless, I’m hooked enough to at the very least see this first arc through.
Have you checked out his new one, A Righteous Thirst for Vengeance? I lovee that (so far) it's been telling the story in as little words as possible, especially since Remender tends to be a particularly wordy writer (in a good way) Edit: Ha, Remember.
Started a comic book club with some friends and so far we have read Black Hole, Wytches, Y: The Last Man, Alex + Ada, and we just started Department of Truth.
I dislike Greg Land. I don't want anyone to lose their job, but... I don't know how to finish that sentence.
Burying the lead, lol: All-ages Star Wars comics are gonna be published at Dark Horse, not the main line. Still, after losing the main Star Wars line, Alien/Predator, and Conan to Marvel, must be fun to be back in the Star Wars game a little. Wonder if this means the IDW line of Star Wars books is dead. And, if so, what the odds are of that aimless all-ages Marvel Action line also switching publishers. So disappointing that the promising Marvel Action: Spider-Man series was botched so terribly.
