You should read 52 if the idea of a would without Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman interests you. It’s one of my all time favorite series.
Read it either last year or the year before, it was my main comic goal for that year. I loved it. Would have been really something to keep up with weekly.
I find that kinda lengthy limited weekly format interesting, but not in a world full of double-shipping titles, oversized issues, events, random weekly filler miniseries, etc., plus regular comics all costing four bucks.
There are some Cyclops fans here on chorus dot fm, right? This one-shot that comes out tomorrow sounds great.
Just read Gerard Way's Doom Patrol run up through Milk Wars. Might be pulling me back into comics...any recommendations that are in the sorta-weird and fun realm?
Let me preface this by saying I own a couple of those trades but haven’t read ‘em yet. Haven’t read some of what I’m gonna mention either. That being said, I do think I’ve seen & heard enough to point you in a pretty good direction. First, I believe there’s one more Gerard Way Doom Patrol story after Milk Wars? So, you should probably just finish that first, lol. After that, I’d probably recommend the rest of DC’s Young Animal imprint, which was a sort of pop up imprint that Gerard Way oversaw. The only ones I personally read was Shade the Changing Girl, & Eternity Girl, both which I enjoyed a lot. The rest all seem more or less within that same tone & style. And, there’s not enough material to be overwhelming. Don’t know, since you said “back into comics,” if you’ve read Grant Morrison’s Doom Patrol yet, but if not, now’s as good a time as any. (Still got my first volume of that on my shelf unread, lol.) And, if you loved Nick Derington’s art, check out Batman: Universe, written by Brian Michael Bendis, which is a stand-alone story that’s supposed to be a super fun adventure. Derington’s also drawing a Batman miniseries allegedly starring Luke Fox, written by John Ridley, which comes out early next year.
N.E.X.T.Wave from Civil War-era Marvel Comics is a funny and weird miniseries, I just forget how continuity heavy it is or isn't, been a whiiiiiiiile since I've read it.
Wow that X-Men Snapshots issue absolutely lived up to what I've heard about it. As an unashamed Cyclops stan who's been incredibly frustrated with the way so many writers have tried to handle the character in more recent years, it's so nice to see him written by someone who clearly has a good grasp on him.
Wow! Thank you for all the recs, going to add them all to my list! From what I've seen these will be up my alley, much appreciated!
Written by someone who has an entire notebook full of “Cyclops had a good day” sketches from various artists, lol. Would totally read an ongoing X book from Jay Edidin, though part of me would like to wait until after the Hickman era is over so he can do whatever without having to worry about Krakoa.
Same. As much as I love pretty much everything Hickman and co are doing with Dawn of X and as much as I would love an Edidin ongoing, the former would almost certainly hinder what Edidin could do creatively with the latter. Though a one-shot by Edidin showing Cyclops grappling with Krakoa and what he thinks about it could be interesting
Yes! DC Universe app is going to cut down the release window for new comics to 6 months beginning in January. My long, solitary nightmare is nearly over!
I’m glad it’ll be a more comics-centric app now! I haven’t kept up with enough recent stuff for the time frame to matter so far. But that’s in line with Marvel Unlimited so that’s a plus.
My plan for the next few weeks is to do some aggressive comic book reading since I took a break to re-read the Kingkiller Chronicle books. I just read my first (I think) book by Ram V, which was an issue of Catwoman, and it was good! I’m excited to read more from them going forward. Morrison’s Green Lantern is...a bit meh. But the Liam Sharp art is soooooo awesome.
Yeah I usually like King’s DC work but idk wtf they were thinking with that. “Hey everyone was super happy we brought back Wally for Rebirth, so let’s do something to totally sabotage his character.” and then laziest retcon ever in Williamson’s Flash trying to blame it on Reverse Flash just this past week.
I can’t speak to the last bit as you are like 15 months ahead of me haha. As for King, I think I am kinda souring on him.
My feeling is that King gets an idea for a story, and if that story fits the character? cool! if it doesn't? cool! if editorial wants him to switch in a different character, but he gets to keep his 'story'? cool! Seems like the hook and/or twist is what drives his stories, characters/histories are second fiddle, which... doesn't really work when you're using characters with 80+ year histories in some cases.
I can see that. But my main criticism is that he seems to be trying REALLY hard to be seen as writing “serious, adult” comics. His frequent use of classical poetry in his books, for instance. When it’s a mini series or something contained, I can usually get into it. But when he is dealing in mainstream comics continuity, it just seems a little...thirsty.
