Not sure if anybody else that read it besides @Vivatoto but I just finished Dark Nights: Metal and I don't know what to think. It was kinda dumb and kooky but the art was all amazing so I don't know what to think.
Speaking of Scott Snyder, if you're a fan of his work (I personally never really got into his stuff, but I know some of y'all really love him), check out his Kickstarter: Scott Snyder & Tony Daniel’s NOCTERNAL 1 Collector’s Edition Drawn by Tony Daniel. Snyder's personal profits will all go directly into his next wave of creator-owned stuff. And, (DC Black Label's) Mark Doyle, who is one of the people let go in this DC restructuring, is an editor for this project & was hired on retainer by Snyder for his future projects under his production company. If these people have been involved in things you've dug, & you have some comics money to spend right now, this feels like a good way to use that money.
Could anyone who's been keeping up with the X-Men relaunch point me in the direction of a reading list/order? I read the Dawn Of X intro stuff, but not really anything since the Krakoa stuff began, and uh... man, have they been putting out X-Books, it's a little overwhelming lol I've been enjoying it because I've honestly become so fatigued with "events" that happen within the main continuity, it just... makes things so messy and feels like there's no impact. This just being its own wild story pulling from all weird corners of DC history is way more up my alley. I'm honestly interested to see if they use this as a Crisis-Reboot thing or if it's gonna revert back to status quo.
The main event is just kinda all over the place and doesn't make much sense to me. I started the tie-ins and those are really good so far!
Me: “When Marvel inevitably tries to publish a new Eternals series because of the movie, wonder how they’ll try to make people care about it.” Marvel: *puts Kieron Gillen & Esad Ribić on it* Me: “...shit. You win this one, Marvel.”
The books, even though they’re telling different aspects of the same story, haven’t had a ton of crossover to this point after House & Powers of X ended. The biggest thing would be to read X-Force #1 early on as it has an event that is referenced a lot. Otherwise you can just pick what team interests you the most and read up to the current books. X of Swords preludes are just starting now so it’s a good time to catch up prior to that event. If you’re wondering which books have been good or who’s on what teams, I can provide some quick reviews.
Yeah, that'd be awesome! So, other than starting with X-Force I can just kind of go series by series? Or will I end up spoiling some stuff for myself, and should try to read each series in chunks to coincide with each other?
They make pretty subtle references to each other every now and then and what I'm guessing is gonna be the first "proper" crossover is coming soon with X of Swords. Up to this point, though, yeah you can pretty much go series by series. The end of every book has the reading order that follows the actual timeline of the books, so if you decide down the line you want to read them in chronological order, they make it pretty easy
The best of the X-Men books to me have been Marauders and New Mutants. Kate Pryde & Emma Frost are two of my favorite characters and they own Marauders. New Mutants was a surprise for me cause I was much less familiar with all of them prior to this, but it has been super fun. The mainline book has been really good too with probably my favorite single issue of the new X books when they introduce The Crucible (#6?). The only knock is it has felt like a lot of setup for the future. X-Men/Fantastic Four was also a great miniseries. The only series that I haven’t enjoyed was Fallen Angels, but that’s already been cancelled and replaced.
Every few weeks, I dip into the upcoming release list on Comixology and pre-order my trades for the next month or so. Did that this morning, and gosh did I miss doing that during the heat of the “pencils down” period. The bummer is that DC doesn’t put their listings up more than a week or two ahead, but at least I’ve got the next Daredevil, Sex Criminals and X-Men trades to look forward to.
Feel like that's always been Hickman's thing with long Marvel runs, lol. I remember reading the second trade of his Fantastic Four & thinking it felt like a handful of loosely related movie trailers. I think the Secret Wars miniseries is the only Hickman series I've ever read in single issues. Look forward to making my way through his X-Men epic when it's 2/3 of the way done.
Glad Chip Zdarsky's Afterlift is getting a physical release. I ain't into the whole digital thing & was curious about that one.
Begin with X-Men #1 which has a reading list at the end of it. I think there was an issue or two that it stopped having the list (Issues 5-7) but it resumes again the next month. Pretty much every title is great. Hickman is doing an insanely phenomenal job with this.
Did anyone read Batman - 3 Jokers this week? That was a good setup. And fantastic art. And I hope I'm wrong but I saw a theory that they could be setting up Jason Todd to be the next Joker and that would make me sad
Loved it. Hope that theory isn't true though. Seems crazy it's only three issues. Also that final moment was something I've wanted to see since Red Hood so that felt incredibly satisfying, regardless of what it will mean in the over all narrative.
Re: 3 Jokers i feel like it’s gonna end up just being one Joker left standing whose identity is never revealed and the story will end on a vague note as to who the original was. Hopefully they surprise.
My only issue was that it doesn't mesh at all with my favorite Snyder scene, the bench scene. But I don't really care about continuity if it's a good story, I mean Aflred's around for one thing.
