Just spent some time flipping through my DC Comics: Art of Darwyn Cooke oversized hardcover, and man...

I don't know what's more unfair, how talented he was, or the fact that he's been gone for years now.

Fans of Alex Ross should really check out the Marvelocity book. It doesn’t have all of his work over the years, but it has a lot of cool stuff in it.

DC is starting to sour on me. A lot of books are hitting the "I'm out of ideas" or "New creative with bland ideas" phases of their books. Aquaman's throne story was greatly enhanced by the art.

Still haven't read the Bendis stuff yet. I'm hoping its good.

  7. Some thoughts on Bats, from last week:
    • I finished Scott Snyder’s run of Batman this week. I enjoyed Superheavy and Bloom enough, but they weren’t my favorite. I know that writers like to change things up a lot, but when there’s someone else in the Batman suit, it never quite feels right to me. I was mostly reading it to get to Bruce coming back, but even then, how they did that … was kinda silly. Even for comic books. Neither of these trades were up at the level of my favorites from Snyder. I was blown away when I first started The Court of Owls and so I was a little sad his run didn’t end as strong as it began. I remained in a Batman mood, especially since it was recommended to me that I’d like Tom King’s work, so I read the entire I Am Gotham trade as well. Since it’s part of the “DC Rebirth” stuff, it’s a nice return to form for Batman. It felt like a good way to ground the character again, and kind of “reset” where he is. I think that’ll be nice to free up some new story ideas. This story did a great job of blending the dark with a little levity, and I’m excited to see where it goes from here. I can see why Tom King’s been praised as a writer; he’s excellent. (Batman reading has meant a new iPad wallpaper too.)

If you think getting Bruce back as Bats was silly, I'd love to hear your take on Metal. lol

Makes sense. The next batch of DC trades you get should probably be the (to use Marvel's recent term) "fresh starts," right? Like Wilson's Wonder Woman, Morrison's Green Lantern, Bendis' Superman/Action, DeConnick's Aquaman.

Is The Flash still twice monthly? That blows my mind, lol.

I loved Williamson’s Flash since the start of Rebirth but EVERYTHING since the Annual reintroducing Bart has been filler.

The Freeze and Dick stories were so fucking good. I'm glad that's how they followed up the wedding. Stoked for what's coming.

The Tyrant Wing, which I believe is next, is probably my favorite arc of the series so far. It at least has my favorite issue.

Curious if anyone has preferences for types of posts they prefer to read (reviews, editorials, etc.). I'm no longer doing the Spidey site since it wore me out with all of the word count and post quotas they had, so I'm finally getting to read some non-Spidey comics now and have some ideas for things I'd probably want to write about.

    Good posts. lol.

Um. I'm actually not that into comic book reviews for the most part. They usually just end up mostly recapping the plot, with a list of creators & a throwaway "I liked it" or "I didn't like it" assessment thrown in. Usually not that interesting a conversation about what a comic did well, how it did it, etc.

I think a more thought out discussion about what worked in a comic would be interesting. Not that it has to be super academic, though the nerds able to do that are cool. But, even just on a personal level, what specific qualities in the art worked for the reviewer? What about the protagonist's characterization? Are there specific dumb jokes that really tickled the reviewer's sense of humor? Simple plot recaps are boring (though I remember succumbing to that occasionally for WASC, just to hit quota & crank crap out, lol), and any assessment that can be reduced to "comic good" or "comic bad" is boring.

Oh, and I generally think reviewing a character that one knows very well is way more interesting than reviewing one that they don't. But, if someone's new to a character, talking about being new to a character can be an interesting angle. Getting back to a character you haven't read in forever can be a good angle, too.

Yeah, I'm leaning more towards editorials about certain runs and characters. I mostly did the recap reviews because of the quota, too. With all of the news posts needing to be a minimum 250 words as well, it was just so much to crank out haha.

Once I catch up on Tom King's run, I think that'll be one of the first things I want to write about since I've really enjoyed how he's been handling Batman. I'd also love to write something about Wonder Woman once I dive into more of her comics. There's just so much I want to read now and I don't even really know where to start haha.

Appreciate this input, though! If @Jason Tate is cool with it, I may write about some comics on the main site or they'll wind up in my newsletter. Either way, I'll let this wonderful thread know when I think I write something you all might enjoy reading.

I'm just here to start mini-riots on Chorus, didn't you know that? I'd be happy to drop them in the blog section if that helps with the backlash any though.

First issue of the new Harley run was better than the majority of the Conner run. Really happy there is a new creative and they abandoned that entire cast of characters.

I must say, James Tynion IV has really rounded into a good writer. His recent DC books have been very enjoyable. (JL dark 1-3 and JL 5 being the most recent thing I’ve read.)

Been loving everything he’s been writing recently. Everything is so damn epic. Hopefully DC continues giving him their events because Witching Hour and Drowned Earth were both excellent. Today’s issue of JL Dark really displayed how terrifying the series’ big bad is. He’s one of the most dependable writers right now.

I really dug most of Tynion's Detective run, but some of the more recent arcs haven't been very good.
