I’m finally getting caught up on King’s Batman after missing the last 25ish issues also picked up Infidel on sale
I know that both Iron Man 3 & Batman Returns exist. Both are good movies. (I guess we also have Once Upon a Deadpool now, but does that even count?) But, someday, I wanna get a live action comic book film that's full on a Christmas film. Like, imagine a Superman or Spider-Man holiday film. Or, a live action Batman film where he's happy & has the blue & gray costume, w/ a full Bat Family. Or the Fantastic Four, or Claremont-era X-Men? So many options. Make this happen, Hollywood. You'll make big money, & make me very happy.
So far for Christmas I got these trades: - Your Pal Archie - Archie: the Man From R.I.V.E.R.D.A.L.E. (it's written by Tom Defalco, so I already know I'll love it.) - Tales of Suspense: Hawkeye/Winter Soldier - the first volume of Thompson's Hawkeye
I'm really excited to read it! As soon as I opened it, my 9 year old nephew snatched it out of my hands and read it in one sitting. Then he opened it to the beginning and read it again.
I own that but haven't read it yet. (I probably posted in here when I got it?) Such a cool, weird, fun story, though. Some awesome pages in there.
Definitely. Fernando Ruiz is the best Archie artist. I'm surprised other publishers haven't snatched him up since Archie has been neglecting him lately.
Doesn't he do an independent series now in his traditional Archie style? Maybe he has too specific a style for the major publishers. Like, the late Darwyn Cooke, who was my favorite artist, an absolute legend... got pigeonholed as the nostalgic artist by the Big 2 & struggled to get anything that wasn't a throwback from DC. And, he refused to work w/ Marvel after they screwed him over on an all ages proposal he had. So insane and dumb. I bet a standalone monthly Spider-Man series in that style would be a success.
His social media shows his versatility, but yeah, I think he's pigeonholed for sure. He can do a lot of different things, but his name is synonymous with the old house style of Archie. Yeah! It's called Die Kitty Die! He writes and draws it along with Dan Parent, my other favorite Archie artist. It's about a witch who has a comic series and her publishers are trying to kill her off in the real world to boost comic sales. Fernando Ruiz drew a sketch of Spider-Man on his FB just the other day and I thought it looked great! I'd definitely buy a series in that style.
Final list of Christmas comics, between family & church friend: Man of Steel (Bendis) Eternity Girl (Young Animal) Venom: Planet of the Symbiotes Amazing Spider-Man: Learning to Crawl Supergirl: Being Super Legion of Superheroes: Eye for an Eye Star Lord (classic, some of it black & white) Flashpoint Avengers Scarlet Witch collection Wonder Woman Rebirth vol 4 Plus: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse: Art of the Movie Black Panther on Bluray & a Spider-Man mug (...and some odds & ends that ain't relevant, like Christmas cookies & a Bible) I can't wait to FINALLY read Bendis' Superman for myself.
@Tim let me know what you think of Man of Steel! Been meaning to read it but I haven’t yet. I just get money/gift cards for Christmas but I just noticed that Target sells comic book trades online only so I’ll be looking for stuff to spend some gift cards on.
Read it this morning, was the comic I was most excited to read. It was good. The mix of art styles has a weird flow, though it helps that so many great talents were in the mix. Bummer that everyone except Adam Hughes was colored by Alex Sinclair; Kevin Maguire & Doc Shaner would've looked better w/ a different colorist. But, like... Bendis really is a great fit for Superman. It's like reading Geoff Johns Superman with a dash of Ultimate Spider-Man. Thoroughly modern, yet thoroughly vintage Supes, in this very specific way. Bendis just... gets the character, & his supporting cast, & the world. It's just right. The highs of Rebirth Superman were great, but this change was for the better.
Facebook group had 2019 comic book resolution post. Like that thought. Said this: - End 2019 with nothing on my pull besides Spider-books & Ms Marvel; more fully commit to trades. - Re-organize my single issues & get 'em set up in a more manageable system, possibly in short boxes on a Kallax shelf? - Attempt first comic binding project(s). - Read more.
Been raving about Saga for months but never owned physical copies. Girlfriend got me volumes 1-3 to start whilst I re-read through this heartbreaker of an epic.
I got my first order from TKO publishing if anyone is curious how they handle it. They box it up really nicely and someone would probably have to go out of their way to damage it. The paperback looks and feels really good, the pages are a tad bit larger than average, maybe an inch or two. A little bit of the between pages bleed but it's alright.
The volume one tpbs I got for Christmas were Astonishing X-Men (Whedon) Venom (Cates) Runaways (Rowell) Champions Batman: White Knight Batwoman: Hydrology and also got Seconds by Bryan Lee O'Malley, which I've been wanting to read forever haha
Cates' Venom is such a big, fun, cool series. Still gotta check out Runaways; the Anka art I've seen from it is fantastic, easily his best interior work thus far. I haven't pulled the trigger on White Knight yet, but I am interested in checking it out eventually. Seems like a neat remix of Batman.
