Did a quick podcast this week on The Unbelievable Gwenpool Vol. 4: Beyond the Fourth Wall if anyone is interested. Gwenpool: Beyond the Fourth Wall
Been back into comics hard with all the MCU-hype lately. Used to have a pretty big problem collecting comics (spent WAY too much money and have little to no space for them now), so I subbed to Marvel Unlimited and I'm ABSOLUTELY LOVING IT. Made my way through the entire AvX event, now I'm running through Morrison's X-Men run, post AvX stuff (to lead into Marvel NOW content), and the old New Mutants series from the 80s (Magik is one of my faves, so I'm trying to read as much content with her as possible.) Past that, I've been looking into some of the non-Marvel stuff on Hoopla and The Wicked & The Divine and Monstress both look fully up my alley. Planning on zipping through those in the near future.
The art is stunning and the overall look of it + reviews had me interested from when it first released, but NONE of the LCS near me had a copy of the first issue in stock (and they were only maybe 2-3 issues in at this point.) For some reason that frustrated me so much that I never picked it up at all, which I'm regretting a lot now.
I breezed through Messiah Complex and Messiah War in just a few days. I just started Second Coming. I think I liked Messiah Complex just a little more. Bishop's role in all this is just awesome.
I wish! Unfortunately sold almost everything before I moved save for my MegaMan comics (had a bunch of cool variants and such and I'm a huge nerd for MM.) Started buying a bit again after moving but had to cut it outta my budget cuz I didn't wanna fall in the same hole, haha. As I get back into it digitally now I feel like I can buy a cool chase variant here and there of characters I really like for collectability and then just read on my phone/tablet/etc.
I’m reading through Kelly Thompson’s Hawkeye and wow. This brings vibes of Fraction’s series. So so good.
Kelly Thompson rules. I'm so into her West Coast Avengers series coming up w/ the Hawkeyes & America. (That writer w/ that team name & those 3 members was honestly something I actively was hoping for, lol.) And, Quentin seems like he's be a fun addition. I think I could do without Gwenpool on the team, not as any slight on that character but because I don't know how her gimmick would work in this context. I'm open to being wrong about that, though.
I love America as a character, but I tried her solo series and I only read one issue and didn’t continue. I love that she is a person of color, a woman superhero, and LGBT, but I didn’t like the series. I feel guilty, since I want to be all for it. But I really did not like the writing.
I was always a huge MegaMan fan as a kid. I recently started playing through MMX on the SNES Classic, and I discovered that my library’s digital comics app has a ton of MM comics. Those are so fun to read through.
Reading through Black Monday Murders. I really love Hickman. The guy is incredible when it comes to world building. They are always so weird and nuanced. I really hope he finishes Manhattan Projects. Almost through the first omnibus of Hellboy. I love it so much. Its aged really well and is just great. Thinking of buying the Spawn Origin hardcovers. The toys and film were a big part of my childhood, but I never read any of the stories. Really interested in jumping in.
Oh hey, Gail Simone writing a Plastic Man series. Not a favorite character but she'll probably turn him into one. It's also such a bummer that they couldn't keep the same artist for longer than 2/4 issues of No Justice.
The more I think about it, the more I wish comics either committed to exactly one issue a month (maybe with just one month off on occasion), or got released as graphic novels. Marvel & DC's twice-monthly, weekly, and monthly-but-with-random-double-shipped-months models suck. And, when a creator-owned series takes a big break between arcs, I can't but wonder why the heck they use the monthly comic model at all. It's all just bonkers all around. Just a random thought while looking at various upcoming series and deciding what I want to actually include on my pull. I love having monthly comics, but man, the system is broken.
I’d be all for straight to trade releases. They’d likely put ads in them if there were no single issues, but I probably wouldn’t mind that as much.
Barrier continues to be amazing. Black Panther #1 for the intergalactic world of wakanda story is good too.
The first Moon Knight trade made me smile so hard. Max's wife posts a lot of pictures of his kids, so I immediately recognized the girl in the book as his daughter. So adorable.
