Chris Claremont’s epic run that lasted years. It’s collected in the Marvel Masterwork trades. So so many essential X storylines. If you haven’t read it, do it ASAP. Dark Phoenix Saga; Mutant Genesis; God Loves, Man Kills; and Inferno. I kinda don’t like Days of Future Past though.
Okay here's the list of trades I got from my uncle last year: X-Men: Mutant Massacre X-Men: Fall of the Mutants X-Men: Inferno X-Men: X-Tinction Agenda Uncanny X-Men: Rise & Fall of the Shi'ar Empire X-Men: Prelude to Schism X-Men: Schism The Avengers: Living Legends Marvel Omnibus: Atlantis Attacks Uncanny X-Men: The Extremists X-Men: Messiah Complex X-Force/Cable: Messiah War X-Men: Second Coming X-Men: Endangered Species Can't beat free, right?
Messiah Complex, Messiah War, and Second Coming is a trilogy and meant to be read in that order. There are other books with important events relating to them, but those are the three main events. Rise and Fall is an amazing sci-fi epic you’ll really love.
I’ve read most of the classic Claremont stuff, and it’s great. Age of Apocalypse comes from the era I’ve mostly ignored up until now, since everyone recommends Claremont mostly and it’s a long run as you know. But I’m liking AofA so far. It’s no Dark Phoenix but it’s way better than the movie of the same name haha.
Anyone in here currently reading Venomized? I’ve been slacking from comics and decided to put my nose to the grind stone and get back into them heavily. So I got Marvel Unlimited and I’m trying to buy my favorite stories in single issue books and sticking with mostly everything single issue (was all trades before). The single issue aspect is just way more fun. Anyone have any advice for me to play catch up with stories and how to effectively buy these back issues without buying trades? (With some exceptions of course, I have the Saga trades but maybe one day down the line I’ll trade them in for the single issues)
I started Venomized recently so I could review the issues. I think it’s okay so far. I haven’t totally caught up on venomverse still though so I’m just piecing things together as I go haha.
Been reading a lot of comics lately. Got through Grass Kings 1-5, Royal City 1-5, and Paper Girls 1-10 (I’d read 1-6 forever ago and decided to just start from the beginning to catch up.) Some truly amazing work on display there.
Grass Kings is the Matt Kindt book from Boom! It’s about a group of people who created a community that they claim is, essentially, sovereign. This runs them afoul of local law enforcement. In essence, it’s the story of a rural-ish town that develops into a bit of a crime mystery. Royal City is Jeff Lemire. It is about the Pike family who are brought together after the patriarch of the family has a stroke. The story is meant to be purely a “slice of life” comic similar to a lot of 1990s era indie cinema. But he adds very small touches of...genre for lack of a better word. The first arc has the slightest touch of what I’d call magical realism. It’s very well done. And can really hit the feels.
Double post! I’ve now made my way through Paper Girls 15. And I’ve also now made my way through Black Hammer 13. Hot diggity damn. So many good comics!
Recently read the first two books for The Flash by Geoff Johns. I actually really enjoy his take on Wally. Also read Hellblazer: Dangerous Habits. Next up is book one of Morrison's Doom Patrol. After that, I have quite a few Geoff Johns books to get through. I have 5 of his GL trades, Infinite Crisis, and 3 Teen Titans ones. Finally feels like I'm making some progress on finishing up all of the trades I own.
Royal City is killing me. It's such a quiet story but I always feel haunted by the soundtrack when I'm reading an issue. I never want this comic to end...but also want it finite to make the run that much stronger. Have you read the Sherlock Frankenstein and Doctor Star minis? SF is all finished and DS is halfway through and is already as powerful as the main series. So excited for Age of Doom this week! Can never get enough Jeff Lemire books!
Royal City is great. I never do the soundtrack thing with comics, but that’s cool to hear. Have you read Gideon Falls? I thought the first issue of that was great. And no, I have those two Black Hammer ancillary books, but I haven’t read them yet. I’ll do that as soon as i can though because I adore this book.
I liked the first issue, but I think it's gonna be a grower for me. Really enjoying Father Quinn and his mystery, but I'm not fully sold on Norton just yet. I'm sure I'll be fully invested in both of them by the end of the first arc.
