Started Batman: The Black Mirror last night and finished it today. Man, I sure loved seeing Dick as Batman. Might be one of my favorite Batman stories yet. Next up is catching up on the Saga trades I own, volumes 4-6.
FYI, just saw him post to Instagram that his site sold it to 7 people and he's refunding 6 of them. Hope you're the one who gets it, though!
Totally agree, makes me want to dive into FF4 and Dr Doom, I can't even imagine how exciting that confrontation would be if you knew more about the history between those 2, but obviously Hickman does a great job of giving someone like me something to get emotional about. There were a lot of moments that made me stop and catch my breath, another one was Dr Strange's death which was done so perfectly
If you're still riding that Hickman wave, going back to his F4/FF run would probably be a good idea. That's my personal favorite. You could start with the run by Millar and Hitch that came directly before Hickman's run, which I haven't done yet, but I hear that Hickman used elements of the Millar run. (Also, Hickman wrote the Dark Reign: Fantastic Four miniseries during Millar's run, which I also skipped during my original Hickman read, which you'll probably want to include.) Something else you should consider reading if you wanna see where Doom went after Secret Wars is Infamous Iron Man by Bendis and Maleev. It's really part of Bendis' larger Iron Man narrative (which started right after Secret Wars, included Civil War II, and will wrap up next year with Invincible Iron Man #600) and probably makes the most sense read as part of that, but I think the 12 issues of Infamous could also be read on their own. Doom's turn as an anti-hero lately is built off the foundation of where Hickman left the character.
Add Superman to the list of characters Tom King can knock out of the park (in Batman, he's not writing Superman obviously)
So Tom King sneaked in a ridiculously good short story in the DC Holiday Special. No idea what the hell it had to do with Christmas, pretty sure it was just because it was snowy, it's more like Sheriff of Babylon than anything DC, but King fans should definitely read it. Francesco Francavilla too.
About that time of year to break out that short little Leah Christmas story from Friendly Neighborhood Spider-man Annual, makes me happy and sad af the same time!
Honestly, I do want to check out Tom King's Batman eventually, and this from someone who still has little interest in Scott Snyder's Batman outside of the Gordon Batman stuff (and who finds the whole Dark Nights: Metal thing so unappealing that it almost feels like The Emperor's New Clothes, lol). It feels from afar like King is taking Batman in some genuinely interesting directions that explore his humanity in a cool way and don't treat him as the automatic coolest character ever. Some of this might be my prior attachment to King's writing style, but regardless, he must be doing something right to make me somewhat care!
Speaking of Tom King and DC, I just pictured in my head a patented 12-issue King series centered on Superman, and now I demand that this actually happen. It could be illustrated by Doc Shaner, or maybe Mike Allred. Oh gosh, I know I'm already sorta getting that type of thing with Johns in Doomsday Clock, but still, why is a King Superman limited series not already a thing?
Been reading a lot of Millarworld; Kick ass, Nemesis (favorite), wanted...Reading Superior now and it's great.
Read through volumes 4-6 of Saga and enjoyed them all. I know I'm still pretty behind on those, but I don't own anything past vol. 6 yet. Also read Wytches Vol. 1 and loved that. Nice to read something from Snyder that isn't Batman-related (even if I love those, too). Then I went through and read World War Hulk. I read the mini-series and the Incredible Hulk issues for it and it felt a little underwhelming after how much I liked Planet Hulk. Next up, Arkham Manor. And then I'll be straying from my reading list so @Tim and I can podcast on The Death of Superman. After that I'll have about 8 more trades on my list to read through and then I'll be making a new list because it still feels like I barely put a dent in my unread trades.
Reading through some of Geoff Johns Flash I hate so much of the art. It's incredibly bland. Don't know what was going on in the late 90's-early 2000's, but there are so bad looking books. I noticed it with Supergirl as well. I guess I can't be too upset since some of the stories are really dumb too. Hal as The Spectre is perplexing to me.
Just got a $10 Amazon gift card at our office holiday exchange. Someone please recommend a cheap/discounted trade to order. Preferably DC or Image. $10-15 range. Thanks!
