Hey, thread, it's about time for us to put together the Thor: Ragnarok Further Reading post!

(If anyone's reading this who's new, Further Reading is a set of comic book recommendations that this thread puts together for each comic book movie. We choose 5 or 6 accessible trades and write a short blurb for each, and then post that in the movie thread opening weekend. The post also gets linked to on the front page. It's a way to get new readers into the wonderful world of comics!)

I think I already have a good idea of what 4 of the picks should be, but as always, I'm open to suggestions. What I'm thinking:

- Thor: God of Thunder vol. 1 by Aaron & Ribic (great introduction, and influenced the film's take on Hela)

- Unworthy Thor miniseries (a more cosmic story with a hammer-less Thor)

- Thor: Disassembled (is about the Ragnarok)

- Planet Hulk (because, well, Planet Hulk)

Maybe we could throw in some of Kieron Gillen's Loki, or some Jane Foster Thor, or Angela, or Sif's Journey Into Mystery? Or are there any runs pre-Jason Aaron for Thor that any of you wanna contribute?

 

I'll let others take first pick since I think I've participated in most, if not all, of these so far. One quick suggestion, though. Maybe we add my Planet Hulk episode as bonus content or something? 100% optional, just thought I'd throw it out there.

 

I think I spent $800 today (probably closer to 900), more than half of which was on two pieces. Still waiting on my Jae Lee piece.

@scottlechowicz hasn't been around in a while ... so used to seeing him post comic comments, haha.

 

Garth Ennis writing a Punisher Max comic in Vietnam again is one of those things that seems too good to be true. The first issue was excellent.

The Return of the Purple Man in Jessica Jones is brutal. Those opening pages were done so well, highlights why I think Jessica's voice is so great for storytelling.

I can already tell I'm going to adore this new Paper Girls arc. The last one was my least favorite, still super great but I got a bit tired of the setting.

Oh and obviously White Knight is great.

This may be my favorite news to come from NYCC.

Figured DC would have been the ones to make that decision.

 

I'm thinking this is Punisher related (maybe a display of the gear/guns he uses?). But this is definitely not a good move on their part. And if I happen to be right on what it is, why not delay this like they did with the show? Blahhh. This is an all-around bad idea.

 

Marvel caught being massively shitty ... and DC gets a dig thrown at them? I mean ... really?

 

It's a long running joke that DC makes a lot of poor marketing decisions. It's been a long time.

Has DC Comics Done Something Stupid Today?

Honestly, I'm basically 100% a DC guy now in the great war that has raged for millennia.

 

Cool, but why bring up that when something is happening right now with Marvel that is fucked up? That's weird. I just don't get the ... but DC angle ...

 

This is surprising if you view Marvel as a comic book company, but it makes a ton of sense when you remember that it's actually a large media empire whose CEO, Ike Perlmutter, is close friends with Trump. Thank goodness comics don't sell enough for Ike to meddle with them too much, and also that Kevin Feige isn't under him at all anymore. (Not that the comics or white-male-dominated films are ideologically wonderful, but they're certainly more tolerable than Ike's and Trump's.)

Anyways, that partnership sucks hard.

 

MARVEL COMICS NYCC Panel Turns Into Chaos As Retailers Contest The Publisher's Methods

 

I kinda feel like the person who spoke up about the Iceman thing could have been the shop near me. I know he has a big booth at NYCC and is crazy conservative. Its a real shame that people are equating stuff like that to poor sales.

 

Man, as someone who rarely gets excited about DC stuff, I am so absurdly excited for Doomsday Clock. All of the talk out of NYCC about the series is freakin' fantastic. I can already see in the preview pages some good hints to what the conversation between Superman and Doctor Manhattan will be like. The prospect of a conversation between Lex and Ozymandias is also super exciting.

 

Thinking I might just go across my wall with different characters from W+D. Trying to think of artists I'd like to draw up each character. I was thinking of having Andrew Maclean do Woden and Annie Wu do Sahkmet but those are the only two I can think off the bat. Kevin Wada doing Dionysus feels like a good fit, but I can't imagine his prices.

 

All caught up on East of West after reading the 7th trade. Continues to be an absolute masterpiece. My Hickman love is definitely starting to reach new levels. I feel really dumb for having not put it together that he's the writer of EoW when I started his Avengers run.

 

Cover from the Venom/Amazing Spider-Man crossover, Venom Inc. If they totally commit long-term to Flash Thompson rocking an Anti-Venom symbiote shaped like Agent Venom, I'm 100% here for that.

anyone checked out the new Runaways? I might grab the trade when it releases. Still thinking about it.

Few stuff
- Love both covers of Mister Miracle #3. Not sure which one to get
- Finished I Am Gotham yesterday. Loved it. Excited to start with I Am Suicide.
- Doomsday Clock looks so good. I want to get the collected edition but my friend says it's probably worth getting the singles for extra content
