Continuing a slow trek through Valiant's stuff and I still love a good 95% of the books I've read. Just got through the Armor Hunters crossover arc, the main heroes in the story all get great moments (loved having lots of Livewire in a crucial role) super interesting set of villains by the end that really benefited by having the XO crossover issues devoted entirely to their backstory.

The main ones (Amazing, Spectacular, Web of, Superior, etc.) are/were in main continuity. Ultimate, Renew Your Vows, Spider-Gwen, 2099, etc. are examples of books in other universes (though Miles Morales, who replaced Ultimate Peter when he died, got carried into the main universe when the Ultimate universe was destroyed in Secret Wars in 2015).

If that sounds confusing, that's 'cause it, um, kinda is, lol. It's honestly not that hard to figure out once you get started, though, especially with the Internet. You just have to accept that crazy continuity stuff happens, and just let each story stand on its own to some extent. I suggest that you just find (with our help!) some great Spider-Man stories to read and slowly learn his wild history as needed for each new series/series.

As for subscriptions... If you wanna read digitally, get Marvel Unlimited, which is basically Netflix for Marvel comics. If you wanna get into single issues, you can use the Internet to find a local comic shop and see if they offer a pull list (where they will pull new issues of whatever comics you wanna follow and set them aside for you to buy without you having to check the shelves and hope everything is in stock still). But if neither of those appeal to you, there's really no subscription needed. You can just discuss stuff here and buy collected volumes (aka "trade paperbacks" or "hardcovers") whenever you want.

This person is actually coming in here due to first commenting on the Further Reading post! lol.

    Thanks everyone!
I started reading Blue from the recs. If things are in the same continuity (like amazing and spectacular), do they follow a linear time course? I guess my perception was there was a main series that has been continuing since the character was created and everything else was a spin off or alternate universe. I knew about Miles's existence but didn't realize it was in Ultimate and then carried over.
Lastly, thoughts on comixology Vs MU?

Yep, I love Valiant. There's a lot of series and arcs where new readers can jump right in. Rai and Ninjak mostly.

MU is all Marvel. The newest issues are 6 months old and new issues are added every week. Comixology Unlimited just added some Marvel, but not much. CU is mainly for indie publishers like Image, Valiant, Boom, IDW, and Dark Horse. I highly recommend that, since CU has a free trial. I prefer indies lately. Idk how knowledagable you are with comics, but there's a lot of series in there you should check out.
The canon, main Spidey series is Amazing Spider-Man. The trade I wrote the blurb for in Further Reading is a good spot to start to see what the recent storyline is. If you want Peter Parker stories that are canon, read Amazing Spider-Man.
As for your linear time course...be more specific. I mean, Peter started in high school in his first appearance in the 60's. Now he's about in his 30s. Characters age really slowly in Marvel.

Those last couple sentences basically answered my question about linearity. When Miles was introduced it made me wonder if Peter was like 60 now and how he was still doing his thing.

In the Ultimate Universe, Peter Parker dies saving the world at the end of Ultimate Spider-Man. Miles coincidentally gets spider powers and decides to take Peter's place. He has his own series for a while with his his own adventures, story, and cast of characters. After the Marvel event Secret Wars, the Ultimate Universe is destroyed and Miles comes to the Marvel Universe. Miles is around 15, if that helps.

So Peter and miles coexist now? And amazing continues with Peter while miles gets his own?

There's also an amazing mini-series where main Peter goes over to the Ultimate universe and meets Miles.

Yes and yes. Miles' series is called Spider-Man and Peter's is still Amazing Spider-Man.

    I know, right?

I've gone thru Blue and Spider Gwen in the past couple days, started Spider Man: Miles Morales yesterday. Think that ones already my favorite so far but this is fun.

  17. Gotta say reading Spider-Gwen is my absolute favorite book each month.

Caught back up on ASM. I liked the "no powers" Peter and "Goblin" fight. I look forward to the story going back to NYC though. Less international and so many characters and stuff.

Really loved the new Spectacular. Smaller story, good writing, a real nice feel to it. Gonna be a must read for me going forward since those are the kinda books I love the most.

Off month for a bunch of other books I read, so it's back to Bats for me next. Just gotta read new Ben Reilly first.

I'm glad they brought Miles to earth 616 and just have him doing stuff in that world now. Gives a younger Spidey vibe (which is so good) while Parker runs his company and does the huge stories.

There's a Spider-Men 2 miniseries coming up real soon by Bendis and Pichelli that's supposed to address who the 616 Miles was that Peter looked up (before the Ultimate Miles we all know came over to 616), if that's what you mean.

Catching up on Bombshells. I can't even tell you how much I detest turning villains into Nazi supporters. If they were originally in that position, sure, whatever. But making Joker's Daughter a Nazi character is so bleh. Its basically lowest common denominator type stuff.

  25. I find it endlessly funny that basically all of Peter Parker's clones are massive assholes/almost villains/kinda villains.
