It sucks that Bane Conquest makes no sense in continuity, especially given what just happened between him and Bats. Also crazy that Batman is letting Bane shoot people up. But dammit if it isn't fun seeing them work together
Loved the last Spider-Woman arc, even though I thought they played their cards a bit too soon. Reading Deadman: Dark Mansion right now. The art is wonderful.
I really want what happened on the last page of Batman to stick...I don't think it will, but I do think it could work.
I wouldn't have minded them taking their time more simply 'cause I love Jess and think Dennis Hopeless did a wonderful job with her, but I also thought the when and how of the final arc was executed well. Also, your avatar
The first issue of Cullen Bunn's the Unsound is pretty terrifying, I think I'll be adding that to the pull.
Super glad that Reborn is continuing since I feel like it was originally going to be a mini series. Millar's plan is 5 volumes which would make me very happy. The ending to book 1 was beautiful. Capullo is the best.
So I have like 50 unread trades still after going on that buying spree when my local shop closed. If I mention buying trades in here, someone please yell at me to read what I already have haha. I'm going to make an effort to not buy more until I read through what I have.
Wait wait wait. Are all graphic novels (or most) the same height? If so - awesome! My B&N order arrived and everything looks amazing all nice and neat and lined up perfectly. I've gotten used to my books not being the same height (easier to do when you have over 500) but I love seeing everything line up.
Yeah, most trades are. If you start buying hardcovers and things like that then they'll vary, which is why I stick to standard trades.
I have a question for those of you who listen to the podcast! So @Tim and I recorded our episode on the first volume of All-New Wolverine. Do you prefer the podcast title being "All-New Wolverine Vol. 1" or is "All-New Wolverine: The Four Sisters" better? I think the latter makes it easier to know what we're covering specifically, but figured I'd ask what you all think to see if you agree or not.
read Batman: Year One today. sooooooooo good! goddamn, that was a lot of fun! glad i made this my first foray into Batman graphic novels. i'm not super knowledgeable on Batman but know the majority of the basics - origin story, where he lives, what Gotham is like, the main villains and main cops, but when we first see all the cats with the woman i was like, "oh shit! a Catwoman appearance! awesome!" - was not expecting that. only expected Batman for this. loved the back and forth between Gordon's story and Batman's as they both get reacquainted with Gotham. looking forward to future Batman, this was a great start.
Easily my favorite Batman comic. If you want more stories in the Batman world with this kinda vibe, check out Gotham Central and Ed Brubaker's run on Catwoman.
With many Rebirth titles hitting the 1 year mark, I'm curious to hear everyone's thoughts on it. Favorite series, suprises, disappointments, things you still need to check out etc. My personal favorite has been Rucka's Wonder Woman. I think the alternating issues has worked really well and been really interesting and different. While it doesn't fit well into the universe, it's expert telling of one long form story has been so masterful that I don't really care about fitting it into continuity. The biggest surprise series for me has been Green Arrow. Wasn't a huge fan of the N52 run outside of Lemire's work, and given that the writer was staying on, I wasn't too optimistic, but it's been amazing. It has returned back to the roots of GA and stopped trying to make him like the show. Bringing Black Canary back to Oliver's life has been wonferful, Emi plays a big role again, the story has been cool, the art fits perfectly, and most of the arcs are only 2 or 3 issues making it really fast paced.
I'm only reading trades, so my views may be skewed. Wonder Woman is easily my fave. Both Batman bios are great.second Flash trade was bad, but the first was great. Titans first trade was awesome. Green lanterns is good. Hal & is not great. Green Arrow is whatever.
Rebirth has been a massive turnaround for a terribly struggling company... but I still care about a lot more at Marvel and Image than DC. A lot of what's going on just doesn't appeal to my tastes enough to read monthly. Superman is fantastic, though.
Thanks! Made note of this for future reference. Anything along this vibe for other characters / companies? Preferably stand alone titles like Year One is, but I'm open to a full series of volumes (at least to look into).
Ha, yeah, that's about right. I dunno. Lots of cool stuff happening at DC, but besides Superman and the upcoming Doomsday Clock, not much that I look at and think, "Man, I wish I could afford to have that on my pull." When I see people excited about so much of their output, it almost makes me feel like I'm missing something. I kinda view a lot of the books through the same lens as I do the new X-Men Gold series: It's a beautiful love letter to the past that gets what makes the franchise tick, but while it's definitely enjoyable, it doesn't do a great job of convincing me why I should read it instead of the classic material it's inspired by. Still, I find myself really happy seeing others get so fulfilled by these titles. A lot of them aren't for me, but as someone who gets hyped over a lot of what he reads every month, I'm always glad to see other things giving that same experience to other people. Check out Daredevil: Born Again. It's by the same creative team as Batman: Year One, though the art isn't quite as fully realized. The whole thing is still really good, though. Just one trade. Matt Fraction's Hawkeye has almost the complete opposite tone, with lots of charm and fun, but the visual style and grounded storytelling is still not a bad place to go after Year One. It's the series that got me back into comics as an adult and is still an all-time favorite run of mine. The run is collected in four trades. I'm really enjoying Kill or Be Killed, a creator-owned series at Image by Ed Brubaker. It's I think only two trades in thus far, so it'd be easy to catch up on and cool to keep up with. Cool crime series with fantastic art. Alias by Brian Michael Bendis is awesome, too. It's the original Jessica Jones series, which inspired the Netflix series. If a private eye working on the fringes of the Marvel universe who curses a ton sounds appealing to you, I definitely recommend it. Lasted four trades, I believe.
