Love this sketch. Archie characters in homage to Love & Rockets, which itself was highly influenced by classic Archie.
The Spidey episode with @Jason Tate is up now! Welcome To Geekdom Episode 032: Spidey Extravaganza Part 1 I'll be updating the doc momentarily, as well.
A little over halfway through the absolute madness that is Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Strikes Again, the notoriously ugly and wild sequel to The Dark Knight Returns from 15 yrs ago. Man, I'm enjoying this grotesque, bonkers adventure even more than expected. Miller's misogyny is so rough, as is his stance on Superman and Lynn Varley's bizarre coloring approach (which is like a kid discovering Photoshop textures for the first time). However, there's a unique sense of sophistication and experimentation buried within this mess. It's maybe the sloppiest professional work I've ever seen, and yet the composition and pacing feels so deliberate. Some of the character usage is cool, too, especially the Atom. I don't actually recommend this to anyone, lol. It's both artistically and morally rough, to say the absolute least. But, it's a ridiculous book that I just had to talk about.
That reminds me, I haven't actually read the books, but the variant covers to TDK:III are almost always incredible.
It's absolutely bonkers, lol. Such a monstrosity. But, I find it so weirdly fascinating. I feel like I could write a lengthy essay on this thing.
Listened to Deanna and Jason's Spidey podcast issue, I mean, episode. Best part was obviously when I got passingly mentioned. Worst part was my fanboy senses tingling every time there was uncertainty on some random detail that I totally could've answered (and sounded like a mega nerd while doing so). But, yeah, good episode. Miles and Gwen are awesome.
Haha. Thanks for listening! Binge reading is so not good for me remembering those random details. Jason threw out the idea for a roundtable type episode for the Spidey movies we discuss so maybe we can work something out to have you back on for that episode!
The crossover? It wasn't as good as it should've been, but if you're following Spider-Gwen, no need to skip it. I loved that Pichelli and Rodriguez illustrated it, instead of fill-in artists like Spider-Women. Some weird decisions imo, but still a fun pairing.
I'm personally burnt out on discussing Marvel, lol. Their books are largely good. Their business model is largely bad. This has been the case since Secret Wars. We'll see if things are different this time next year, after Legacy happens and settles in, especially if they don't change their mind on no large-scale event next year. Otherwise, it's just an endless time loop, and not the kind I enjoy (like Spidey film debates).
I think a lot of it is the constant articles. I don't follow a lot of the main line stories, and it is all you hear about lately. That or how the good books are getting cancelled. It's all excessive. I'll stick to that free books I like, and leave it at that. I don't even know which of the books I read are canceled at this point. Lol. I have a feeling a bunch of them are. Mighty Thor Mockingbird Silk Spider-Gwen Gwenpool Ant Man Squirrel Girl Howard the Duck Spider Woman Black Widow I think that's it. I think Silk and Howard are the only cancelled ones out of that.
The only ones here not currently ending are Mighty Thor, Spider-Gwen, Gwenpool, and Squirrel Girl. lol. Though, most of them organically told their intended story, and then wrapped up. You also forgot to mention Silver Surfer... which some think is ending in August based on the solicitation wording, but that series is an interesting creature allowed to do its own thing, so who knows. Samnee has been teasing another project now that his Black Widow story is over, so that should be cool. What Marvel needs to do in Legacy is continue scaling back on how many titles they have running at once, and then get the creators on fringe books onto titles in their reduced line-up. The way Mike Del Mundo graduated from a couple short-lived critical successes to the Avengers is a great example, as is Chip Zdarsky getting a Spidey book. I wanna see David Walker, Kelly Thompson, Mariko Tamaki, Saladin Ahmed, Javier Rodriguez, Joe Quinones, Kris Anka, etc. keep getting better titles to work on.
Venom #150 was cool. If you're a fan of the character, definitely check it out, even if you're not already reading this series or planning on keeping up afterwards. Marvel restoring the classic Venom status quo instead of letting the Klyntar's growth with Flash Thompson carry over to Eddie Brock is a bummer, but this particular issue is a cool love letter to this mantle's history. X-Men Blue #4 was decent. Not too eventful, but the proper introduction of this Wolverine was nice. Wonder if next issue will fully explain why he's here, or if they'll just plant seeds for some future stories.
all my volumes of Nailbiter showed up today. super excited to get started tonight. just flipped through and the artwork is amazing.
