@Tim May have to check out some of those Spider-Man recs on Marvel Unlimited. I read part of the Miles Morales run and loved it.
Yeah, finish that. It's really good. There's another series after that too that lasted about 12 issues
@J.Dick you should join us in here, seems like you know some stuff about comics! I think most of us in here would agree with your last point about New 52 costumes.
Gerard Way To Be 'Showrunner' For DC Vertigo Titles, Will Announce At ECCC - Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movie, TV News A Gerard Way Doom patrol comic is literally everything I need in this world. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let this rumour be true.
just realized its April 1st, and now im going to go cry in a corner because this was probably just a sick april fools joke
I know some stuff about comics. I am excited for Rebirth just to see what they do. I'm more of a DC guy than Marvel but I love a lot of stuff Image is putting out right now. Rebirth has to at least be better than New 52. I just hope they figure out a direction for Superman and Green Lantern. Those books have been aimless for a while. Snyder and Capullo's Batman run is going to be considered legendary. I'm very excited for All Star Batman with Snyder. Wonder how many issues will reteam him with Jock? Loved the Black Mirror.
When Hellblazer ended and Karen Berger left I thought Vertigo was basically done because it didn't seem like DC really cared anymore and a lot of those books that would have been Vertigo in the past are now going to Image due to creator rights issues. They really have bounced back nicely.
I started reading Daredevil when Kevin Smith did that Marvel Knights series in 1999 and have read every issue since including David Mack, Bendis, Brubaker, Diggle and Waid. It was years of good comics (except Diggle and Shadowland which was terrible). I also went back and read all the Miller stuff and a lot of real early stuff (which is OK...DD doesnt get good until Miller gets a hold of him). I am so disappointed with the Charles Soule Daredevil now. It is just not good. Hoping Marvel figures something out and gets DD back on track.
@J.Dick Unfortunately I don't really have the funds to dive into Rebirth, plus i have a HUGE backlog of comics to read but there's definitely quite a few that intrigue me. Couldn't agree more about Snyder/Capullo's Batman run, will definitely be a definitive Batman story. Glad to see another DC fan in here, most of us in here are more for Marvel than DC but we all kinda delve into Image stuff. Also in RE: to Vertigo, it definitely seemed like they were in a rut when Berger left and the books they released afterwards were kinda seen as safe books i guess but it definitely seems like they are making a comeback with some of their more recent titles. Don't really know much about too many though unfortunately never read that many Vertigo titles.
I like regular Superhero comics but those are long form, never ending narratives that just go on and on. There is something to be said for Vertigo and Image and other indies in that the stories have a beginning, middle and eventually end. As far as things that have ended at Vertigo I would recommend Scalped, Sandman, 100 Bullets, Preacher, Y the Last Man...honestly they put out a ton of great stuff over the years...Northlanders by Brian Wood. I've not read all of Hellblazer because it is a lot of material and it just seems so daunting.
In terms of paying for all this I still buy some books but I live in Pittsburgh and we have a very extensive library system. I'm more interested in the characters and stories and I don't really have the collector mentality when it comes to comics anymore so I can trade wait for most things.
Pittsburgh Comic Con is now owned and run by Wizard World so that is $50 or so just to get in the door. Those Wizard World shows are very celebrity and sports figures autographs and photos driven these days and I didn't go last year. I like Steel City Con (even though it is also more of a pop culture show and not really a comic con strictly) but there is a real flea market feel to some of those tables. It is a fun show though. I go every once in a while. The shop by me, Pittsburgh Comics in McMurray, is really clean, well run and has a ton of stuff. The dude who runs it, Colin, is a great shop owner. Real friendly and he will go out of his way to help out customers if you need to track down a book or something. He runs a podcast out of his shop too.
dont know everything you have read/not read, but if you ask me Silver surfer is the best comic being published right now. Most innovative art work you will see in a mainstream comic and the writing is just pure fun. otherwise, if you want just a single trade and not a whole series id say pick up Astro City: Confession. I promise you it will be one of the best super hero comics you will ever read. Its essentially an else-worlds robin/batman story.
Batman Killing Joke, Batman The Long Halloween (not an OGN but standalone), Box Office Poison. I've never read Blankets or Aterious Polyp but I know people rave about those.
My friends and I still went last year and enjoyed it, though I do miss the old cons. We've gone to Steel City Con a bunch in recent years. I love the booth, forget what it's called, with a ton of 5 for $20 Marvel trades. You gonna hit up Three Rivers Con? New Dimension Comics' owner is putting it on in May. I'll be at a church event that weekend but plan on hitting up the Sunday. I live in Beaver County and have my pull at NDC in Cranberry but like hitting up different shops. I'll check that one out sometime.
