Love and Rockets is an indie comic that's existed in one form or another since the 80s. The one running storyline is written and illustrated by Jaime Hernandez, and the other (which I haven't really spent time with yet) is written and illustrated by his older brother, Gilbert Hernandez. You can get a decent summary of the series on Wikipedia. Here's some Jaime art: I read more Marvel stuff than everything else combined and am at peace with that decision, but even with that uncool taste, Jaime is probably a top 5 artist of mine.
@Tim that looks very interesting. I'm gonna see if they have those in our local comic shop. I'm probably off base but is it somewhat like Archie for adults?
Kinda. The classic Archie artist Harry Lucey was probably Jaime's biggest influence. His title definitely has an adult punk rock Archie vibe, but especially early on, there were also some more fantastical elements, probably most influenced by his love of obscure Golden Age comics. But, yeah, Archie for adults is actually not that far off, lol.
The Hunt is really good, must be based on the same lore as Wytches, very similar, so if you're dying for Wytches Vol 2 maybe check it out. I started Rat Queens and I'm liking it a lot, not usually a fan of comedy in comics or books but thankfully there's some pretty swell violence.
The artist got removed because he was arrested for domestic violence and although I think that was a fine decision, I don't think the new artists they brought in really fit and it ended up getting put on hiatus. It's coming back in March though so hopefully it'll be back to it's former glory.
I just saw that on a list for new comic releases...Sounds like Joe and Gabriel are back, should be awesome! Really hope my comic store has it.
Read Arkham Knight Genesis today and really enjoyed it. It really explained HOW Arkham Knight came to be and sets up the game
Despite having like 30 trades on my shelf to read, I went to the library and picked up 5 to add to it. Suicide Squad vol. 1+2 by Ostrander, Gotham City Sirens by Dini, Superman Unchained by Snyder, and Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader? by Gaiman.
Superman Unchained was the story that truly got me into the "modern Superman" as a character (probably because of Snyder); I just read Gaiman's a week ago! Such a fantastic, heartfelt story. Hope you enjoy them!
Thanks! Read Gaiman's today and did enjoy it. Snyder got me diving into Batman and since I've been looking for other characters to dive into, I figured Unchained couldn't hurt haha.
I have books one and two of the Johns run, and naturally haven't read them yet. But definitely interested in the Waid and Morrison ones, too. Let me know how they are!
To whoever grabbed the new Archie, do some of the pages on your comic seem a bit washed out? Not sure if it's an issue with my copy or with all the ones released. And do local comic shops usually replace them?
Read Invincible Ironman Vol 2 today. Definitely liked Vol 1 more but seems like this is going in a cool direction. Is Riri Williams brand new through this series or has she been around before?
Sleeper hit: IDW's Jem: The Misfits by Kelly Thompson and Jenn St Onge. I only read the first trade of Jem, which was delightful due in no small part to Sophie Campbell's art, but I somehow never brought myself to read further. I decided to check out the first issue of this spinoff series because I like Jenn St Onge's art on Twitter, and I liked it a lot more than I would've guessed. I almost immediately found myself loving and rooting for Pizzazz. It's hard to articulate why, since it's not a world-changing comic or anything, but I just really dug it.
