Yooooooo an America Chavez solo! Fucking love her. Glad that her and Kate Bishop have become such hugely popular characters lately.
This isn't directly comic book related, but I launched my new podcast, Welcome To Geekdom. Recording an episode today that's all about libraries so you can bet I'll be bringing up comics this episode. First episode was on TV consumption. You can check it out here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/welcome-to-geekdom/id1161925151 Thanks in advance to anyone who gives it a listen!
Already following! I must admit I haven't been reading your reviews 'cause I don't get much out of reading reviews these days, but I'm definitely down for adding another podcast into my life, lol.
Yeah I know a lot of people who feel that way, especially with album reviews. I just enjoy writing them still. But thanks for following the pod! Any support at all is always appreciated!
So, I caved and bought a ton of DC Rebirth titles. They are sooooooooo good. Of those that I bought (Some Action Comics, Aquaman, Batman, Detective Comics, Flash, Green Arrow, Nightwing, Superman, Titans) the only one I didn't like was Aquaman, which is disappointing because I really enjoy the character when done right. And I have a lot of faith in Abnett. But it just did nothing for me.
I'm still debating what I want to buy in trade when they come around. Trying not to overwhelm myself with books.
Interesting. I've only read new 52 Aquaman (in its entirety, and also had a lot of him in events and JLA and stuff) but I'm really enjoying Rebirth Aquaman. I think I cheered out loud when Mera showed up and broke him out. Mera is probably a big part of why I like it, I think she's been kicking some ass. The most recent issues since the first arc completed haven't been anything special though.
Mera is awesome. Sometimes Arthur comes off pretty weak and she comes in to save him. Love the dynamic.
So, I have a very specific version of Aquaman that I love. I prefer the bearded, long haired, hook handed Aquaman. Basically, the Aquaman from Justice League Unlimited animated series or Morrison's JLA. I always enjoyed Aquaman when it kind of felt like a superhero Game of Thrones. The Aquaman that Geoff Johns and co. have curated here is the much more traditional version of the character, I admit. And he just falls flat for me. On this, I am in total agreement. The best part of the New 52 / Rebirth Aquaman has been Mera. Johns and co. have really fashioned her into a true force. I would love her to get elevated to the point where she can support her own book and have stories told around her.
I had the exact same reaction. Phil Hester has done some books I enjoy, but that first issue didn't capture my interest the way I had liked. Maybe I will try and get through the first trade, now that it has some backing.
Most of it is like, lolwutisgoingon. Something about seeing a mountain and a cloud having sex just does it for me.
I really wish Phil Hester could see that quote because it obviously needs to end up on the next trade! Haha! I think it would be worth a revisit, if only because I don't think I was expecting that tone from the book when I did my initial read. Coming at it knowing that it is much more goofy X-Files than super serious X-Files might just improve how I view it.
Ah, that makes total sense. I've been introduced to him a bit backwards. I have to read some of the more of the older Aquaman. I see a lot of mention of things like his death or his son's death that sound like they'd be amazing in context...I mentioned a bit ago in this thread I'm obsessed with Black Manta now, he quickly became one of my favorite villains.
Black Manta is pretty awesome as a villain. Totally underrated in the pantheon of great villains. Honestly one of the best Aquman stories ever is the JLU episode where Aquaman loses his hand. It deals a lot with his son, as well. The actual comics have rarely lived up to the expectations set in the animated series, quite frankly.
POW! ‘BATMAN ’66’ IS SPINNING INTO THE 70s TO MEET ‘WONDER WOMAN ’77’ IN NEW CROSSOVER COMIC BOOK SERIES YES. Now they just need to make an animated crossover.
When does Southern Bastards come back? I know Jason Aaron is a busy man but i need more of that book in my life.
