I immediately closed the book and saw her smiling on the cover and pretty much broke down. She might have grown to be my favorite character at this point, it's hard to compare with such great characters though
I didn't even have time to close the book before i had my meltdown. Young Hazel's reaction and Hazel's narration did me in.Fuck BKV haha
so I scrolled through as much as I could and saw a lot of people mention really excellent suggestions. I would say Superman: Brainiac by Geoff Johns is one of my favorites, All Star Superman and For All Seasons are my top 2. https://www.amazon.com/dp/1401220886/?tag=absolutepunk-20
I've been silent in here recently... but I have been reading through my Avengers masterworks slowly but steadily. Destiny kinda is preoccuping my reading time currently lol
So, we're two days away from getting a new comic about Jessica Jones written by Brian Michael Bendis, illustrated by Michael Gaydos, and colored by Matt Hollingsworth, with a cover by David Mack. And, as a big Bendis fan who thinks Alias might be his best work (though his Miles Morales work is close), I'm really happy about that. Will it be "the same" as Alias? Of course not. But, this team tackling this character, even all these years later, can't be anything less than a wonderful read.
Checked it out from the library for th 2nd time this weekend. Hope to get to it soon. Let me know what you think
Yeah I'm pretty excited for it. Really hope it lives up to expectations. I hope it features a whole lot of Luke Cage, and their daughter Danielle. This week officially kicks off Marvel NOW! 2.0, so we're finally getting alot of looong gestating stuff. JJ, Champions, Death of X, Tartakovsky's Cage, the Return of Namor. Then later this month Unworthy Thor and Doom solo series. Gonna be a damn satisfying month to be a Marvel fan. Don't think it'll top the numbers Rebirth is still doing just yet, but it's the right track.
Yeah, I was not a fan of the story at all and felt like it was trying way too hard to achieve something that it ultimately didn't do. What were your problems with it? Or just not your cup of tea? I see it on "best" lists all the time and honestly hated it haha
I don't need a lot of specifically Luke Cage per se, since he's already being used very effectively (from what I understand; it's not on my pull, in spite of looking awesome) in Power Man and Iron Fist. But, any time spent with them as a family unit will definitely be fun and much appreciated. Speaking of Cage, I have trouble being interested in Tartakovsky's take. It feels very "white dude doing blaxploitation," which feels particularly awkward when we have the great new Netflix series and aforementioned PM&IF comic series. I know it's been in the works for years, but maybe it wouldn't be the worst projects to fizzle out, lol. I've made the decision to not pull Infamous Iron Man, which sucks because I'm so very interested in Doom as tackled by Bendis and Maleev. I just feel like I'd want to read both it and the new Invincible with Iron Heart to get the full picture, and since my pull might need trimming eventually anyways, I'm just gonna hold off on both for now. I hope it's every bit as cool as it should be, though! At least I'll get Doom Iron Man in Avengers, which I'll be pulling just for that Mike Del Mundo art; I'm glad he's gonna be on a big title and hope he doesn't need too many fill-in artists or anything. Speaking of sales, when is DC gonna turn some of their twice-monthly titles into once-monthly? I'm happy about the announced cast so far of JLA on principle, in spite of not wanting to pull it, but is there demand for that team twice a month? How long will Deathstroke, Cyborg, Aquaman, etc. justify that schedule? lol. I get Batman, Harley Quinn, Justice League, Superman, and maybe a few more, but even with these big sales, I'm still skeptical of the long-term sustainability.
Since I broached the topic, the upcoming Marvel series I added to my pull: Jessica Jones The Clone Conspiracy Avengers Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows Black Panther: World of Wakanda I've over-thought that decision way too much, lol. I went with Jessica Jones because, well, I addressed those feelings above. The Clone Conspiracy is a cool Spider-Man concept with excellent Jim Cheung art, so why not? I flip flopped on both Avengers and Champions because I kinda liked Waid's All-New All-Different Avengers, but not enough to continue past the first arc; Avengers made its way in because I love Mike Del Mundo and think this will be going into a more interesting direction. Renew Your Vows was a no-brainer, in spite of not loving Stegman art, because Peter and MJ's marriage is the literal best, especially with a daughter. And, I'm too in love with what Ta-Nehisi Coates is doing with Wakanda to not pick up this companion series. I'm also planning on adding Hawkeye and/or Star Lord for December, depending on what my pull looks like. I'm still wrestling with how much longer I want to read Green Lanterns and Justice League, lol.
Hmm yeah I get wanting to wait for the Iron Heart series, they're very clearly going to be closely entwined. I just can't resist the Doomster though. He calls to me. When was it confirmed he is going to be the Iron Man in Waid's Avengers? I thought so far the confirmed team was Thor, Vision, Cap. Falcon, nuWasp, Spider-man (Peter Parker), and Hercules? I agree though, the twice-a-month schedule is not sustainable for DC for so many books. I actually think at this point they should refrain from shipping out any new books twice a month, only stick to it for the very main books, being Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lanterns OR Hal Jordan and the Corps, and Aquaman. There is absolutely no reason books like Deathstroke, Cyborg, Harley Quinn, Suicide Squad, or Nightwing need to ship monthly. Now that I'm thinking about it, Titans is a book I that think, if they could ensure that the quality and art stays consistent, should go twice monthly. That is essentially the other main story/player(Wally) of Rebirth (the other being Superman). DC fans are ecstatic to see Wally West again, and once a month as part of a team book isn't enough IMO. A team book can stand to be twice monthly so the stories can develop at the same pace but still allow for a wealth of character development for a bunch of characters that aren't appearing anywhere else. It should replace Justice League as the 2x team book. We get plenty of those characters from a hundred other series.
You not being into it makes me feel WAY more validated for all the times I argued it was overrated! Definitely agree like it didn't achieve what it (seemed to) set out to do. For a while I figured I just didn't "get" it (watched the film adaptation to see if it would hit me--it didn't) because I couldn't relate to any of the characters or their predicaments; but all in all, everything seemed pointless (and not in a thematically emphasizing way). As much as I did not enjoy the story, I did like the vague ending that finally hinted at some sort of progression.
The initial Avengers promo image (by neither Del Mundo nor Ross) had an Iron Man who looked like Doom (but weirdly not Spidey, who I kinda hope sticks around), and solicitations confirmed it. I think #2 is the issue where he first encounters the team? Harley Quinn absolutely should keep up twice monthly; it's one of DC's biggest movers and has been for a while. Agree that both Lantern books being twice a month is excessive, unless Green Lantern warrants essentially an issue per week? I'm just glad they kept Batgirl monthly, lol. Interesting that you actually want a title to jump up to that level, though I guess I can see that for people who really missed classic Wally (I never had an attachment to him). As for the Rebirth story, I wonder if they'll just drop hints here and there or make the Doctor Manhattan story into a big (perhaps summer) event. I hope they make it into an event series, since I'm very curious about what they'll do but don't want to have to read all of Titans, Superman, etc. to follow it.
You're better than I am because I couldn't finish the film version either haha yeah, the ending definitely showed some progression but it was just too little too late in a story that I didn't care about at all haha I also thought I might not "get it" but I think it might just be one of those things people like because they're supposed to like. My buddy read it for class just like you and he hated it as much as I did hahaha so I'm happy we're all in that boat!
Damn that does look good. And you're right @Tim, just read on Marvel.com's interview with Waid that Doom is indeed joining the team in issue #2.
I also saw in a recent interview that Spider-Man will be around for a while in a major role, which was emphasized 'cause apparently he was a bait-and-switch in Uncanny leading up to a Cable reveal? Anyways, they'll be operating out of the Parker Industries-owned Baxter Building in NYC, which is neat. Basically, Peter's their Tony, and the F4's old home is the new Avengers Tower, lol. That makes this roster: Spider-Man (Peter Parker) Captain America (Sam Wilson) Thor (Jane Foster) Iron Man (Doom) Vision Hercules Wasp (Nadia Pym) ...which is a line-up that I really like, especially with Waid and Del Mundo leading the team against Kang. Is this enough to undo prior complaints about weak Marvel team books?
