    Tons of great books today.

    DC:
    - Titans continues to be everything great. Interesting developments with Kadabra. Wonder how it ties into Rebirth. I hope this eventually spins out a Wally West solo title.
    - Teen Titans Rebirth was only okay, but it has potential. I know there will be a sixth member joining the team, and I would guess it's Blue Beetle because of the animated movie they put out not too long ago, but that strangely didn't have Kid Flash. Could also be Jonathan Kent Superboy. He would be a good fit.
    - Batman Beyond Rebirth. Always good to have Terry McG back. So schway.
    - Flash. This Godspeed arc is killing it. Every issue of this book has me in disbelief at how consistently good it is.

    Marvel:
    - Captain America: Steve Rogers had huge reveals for Civil War. This Hydra thing is turning out to have major reverberations in the 616 and not just a little self-contained Cap story.
    - I wish New Avengers wasn't coming to an end for U.S.Avengers. I fugging love the team they have assembled now and it will be such a loss tearing them apart.
    - Ultimates is still my favorite Marvel book. And Kenneth Rocafort's art gives it such a fucking awesome stylized sci-fi look. Which made it incredibly jarring that seemingly every other page during the fight scene was drawn by someone with a totally different style.

Okay so I've mostly been really digging into Batman as far as single characters more, but I'm loving the Superman run on Rebirth right now. I have read vol. 1 of All Star and Superman For All Seasons. Any other suggestions on Superman stories to check out. Was New 52 good?

    Sigh.

Ever since Rebirth, DC has changed its Comixology. It used to be that DC titles would drop $1 after a set period of time (usually 6 months). This policy is how I justified my comics habit to the fiance while we are saving for our wedding, "I am not paying full price! I promise to only buy discounted books!"

Now, DC is refusing to discount the Rebirth books. To be fair, this has been Marvel's policy, too. But Marvel has the Unlimited app that more than makes up for it. So now, I feel like I am in a game of chicken with DC. Currently, I am losing because Rebirth is selling like gangbusters so DC has no incentive to discount.

It is too bad because I would really love to be reading DC. Instead, I just read the comments you all make and pretend I am sharing in your joy.

At least the indie books still discount.

The New 52 was not good for a long time.

Greg Pak took over at the end and he told some good stories, but for the most part, the direction in Rebirth is precisely because of how bad New 52 was to Superman.

As for other stories, I am very fond of Secret Identity. Be warned, it is far (faaaaar) from typical Superman. But I love it. Birthright is another book that has a lot to offer in bringing Superman into the modern world. And Red Son is a fun book.

Are you reading the Rebirth Action Comics run? It's been really good.

I read Birthright and it was incredible but that's about all the Superman I've read.

I'm gonna hold off on this til it's collected, but it does look really cool.

  8. Scott Snyder's Superman Unchained made me go from being a Supes hater to a lover. If you read and enjoyed his New 52 run, you'd love this!

Thanks! I did actually read Red Son and enjoyed that. Just slipped my mind when initially posting hah. I'll likely skip over the New 52 stuff then.

I am! Enjoying that as well. Sounds like Birthright is a must-read then.

Yeah I loved his Batman run. That's what really got me digging into it. I do know at least one of the local libraries has it, so I'll grab that next time I go.

I haven't read it, but Grant Morrison's run on New 52 Action Comics is supposed to be pretty decent.

If you want more Superman to read, Superman: Kryptonite is an underrated little gem. It's written by Darwyn Cooke and illustrated by Tim Sale with Dave Stewart colors, which should be enough to make it worth any comic fan's time, lol. It retells the story of when Superman first encountered Kryptonite and has a really fun classic comic book vibe.

Alan Moore's "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow" (illustrated by classic artist Curt Swan) and "For the Man Who Has Everything (illustrated by Dave Gibbons) are collected in one trade and worth reading if you want more classic Supes.

I was actually a little underwhelmed by Morrison's Action Comics run, myself. Consider his AS Superman is my favorite thing ever, I had high hopes. There were some solid ideas, but it never really came together for me.

And man, I debated back and forth on putting Kryptonite and the Moore books in my recs haha. I love them all, but Kryptonite seems hard to find (I think it only ever got collected in HC) and the Moore books are spectacular, but they are a little older and "Whatever Happened..." requires a little context to be properly enjoyed.

But otherwise, yes, I fully endorse these recs!

EDIT: I suppose I'd also add any of the Geoff Johns / Gary Frank stuff. And probably "What's So Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way" by Joe Kelly and Doug Mahnke.

I'm interested in getting into some Superman stuff. Can I start off with the Rebirth stuff? I haven't read anything from Rebirth because the things I've been interested in (mainly Batman stuff) have all had art I didn't like at all.

I was going to start with the New 52 stuff since I heard the Rebirth Superman carries on from what happened there.

Superman Rebirth and Action Comics Rebirth are the first Superman books I've ever actually followed and I have no problem understanding it. Although, I did have a vague idea of what was going on with Superman just from news sites and blogs and whatnot.

  15. I didn't follow New 52 Superman whatsoever and jumped on the Rebirth title solely because the New 52 Batman & Robin team were creating it. Knowing nothing about N52 Superman affected nothing since the Rebirth one-shot brings you up to speed and it didn't really matter going forward with the first arc.

Human being of Earth! Comixology is having a Deadly Class sale right now. Get all 21 issues for 19.99!

This is one of my favorite comics being published right now! And you can get every issue for under a dollar.

Looking at the Rebirth Superman stuff and I'm immediately put off by the inconsistency of the art, especially for Action Comics.

Read Superman Rebirth at least. The story is much more worth it. The plot of Action Comics so far has been relatively thin. Most Rebirth books didn't make it through the first arc without a sub-in artist. I think the exception being Tom King's Batman.

Honestly the arts what's keeping me from reading DC stuff right now. For the most part I don't like the art and when I do the artists change every one or two issues. Marvel seems to be a lot better about this at the moment.
