I thought both Chappelle specials were fantastic.

I loved everything that wasn't homophobic or transphobic.

Even aside from the problematic material, Chappelle's specials were not very good, imo. I can easily name 5 other specials released this year that are way better.

I said on here last week that I typically don't find Chappelle's stand ups that funny (although I'm entertained by him) so I didn't have super high expectations for the new specials. But I found both to be hilarious.

Putting aside all the unnecessary problematic material I think his specials were funny but they weren't anywhere near the caliber of jokes Dave Chappelle, someone considered to be one of the greatest of all time, should be releasing. To me it just had a feature act feel to it. I think these two should have been condensed down into one special after another year or so of preparation and it would have been much much better.

I don't think comparing stand up acts is fair but if I had to watch only two specials from the last year I wouldn't even think about Chappelle's. Off the top of my head I would choose Kinane and Thune's.

Maybe my expectations just were set too high.

I've reached a point where I'm obsessed with comedy podcasts, but find it so hard to sit down and actually watch a stand up special. Like I still haven't watched Kurt's new hour, even though I consider him one of my favorites. (I have never been a big fan of Chapelle, never got into his show or anything, though I was pretty young at the time)

I've discovered a slew of favorite comics through podcasts but only a few of them I watched their specials (Kyle Kinane, Matt Braunger, Pete Holmes, Chelsea Peretti). Yet for the most part I always find them to be more entertaining as podcast guests, whether on DLM, Comedy Bang Bang, or more interview-centric like Nerdist and WTF

I identify with every word of this, so let me stress that Braunohler's newest hour is fantastic and totally worth your time, and I listened to the audio version rather than watching.

Maybe I missed something because I was cleaning my room while it was on but I didn't understand the ending thing at all in Kurt's special. Was it just supposed to be absurd or was it a call back to something?

I really enjoyed the rest of his special though.

I'm not trying to shit on anyone in here who may do this but does it bug the shit out of anyone else when people call standup specials "standups"?

Drives me fucking nuts that I pay for Howl and the new CBB still hasn't loaded into the feed. I can forgive most every other flaw, but come on.

    Thanks.

I watched both Chapelle specials over the weekend and I'd say my thoughts mirror pretty much everyone else's in here: overall decent minus the outdated homophobic/transphobic jokes. And yeah, the idea of condensing both hours into a single, better hour, would've been smart. Definitely had some good laughs though.

    No problem.

I mean, I wasn't trying to shit on Chappelle's new stuff or anything. I guess I just had such high hopes for it and was disappointed. Plus I feel like everyone is talking about Chappelle and there's lots of other stuff that barely gets mentioned that, to me at least, is superior. Agree though, if he had condensed those two hours into one concise hour and cut out the problematic material, it could have been great.
