But that's what he meant as the joke.

Why are people taking his words so literal? It's absurd to think "welp, since I'm black, I better start cross dressing so the cops won't shoot me!"

That's a funny premise, at least to me.

Comparing MLK fighting for civil rights to Pac calling homosexuals animals was also super misguided. Plus the weird gender role premise of the Pac bit.

He meant the joke to be incorrect? He meant the joke to acknowledge that trans people are more likely to be victims of hate violence and police violence than cisgender people? When Patrice O'Neal jokes about keeping a white baby on a keychain in case he ever falls off a boat, that's an honest, tragic, and hilarious premise. Because missing white people spark more attention than missing black people. When Dave jokes that a man pretending to be trans is less likely to be assaulted, it's not coming from the same place. Trans people are assaulted more by police than cisgender people are. They are the victims of hate crimes more than cisgender people.

Dave's whole premise was that, because of how Caitlyn Jenner was received in the media, trans people are, for the most part, accepted and our culture and society is more understanding of people's differences. Thus pretending to be one on the street to avoid violence. His further jokes failed to prop up that thesis, and were actively ignorant of intersectionality and the realities of being trans/trans violence. That's bad, ignorant comedy. Much of the special was very good. Much of it has critiques worth discussing.

I mean, I feel like his whole setup for that joke was as a black man seeing the very positive reception in the media of Catelynn Jenner made him feel as though society was quicker to accept trans people than black people and the bit about walking around town in heels is a manifestation of that feeling. Weather or not that's statistically accurate that's how he felt.
He made the same joke about people wearing gorilla suits after the whole harambe thing

There is definitely some issues with the new specials but I laughed several times at both.

The superhero bit was funny. Jeselnik fans having problems with The Age of Spin material is a ridiculous contradiction. It's apples to apples.

"Oddly" insensitive? He's always made fun of every race and sexual orientation. If you've convinced yourself that Chappelle's Show and his previous specials didn't make a TON of insensitive jokes, I don't mind making a list of them. The new specials were light compared to his old stuff.

It's possible to make a good insensitive joke. By the sound of it, this one wasn't.

I don't get why it's considered "Apples To Apples" trying to compare it to actual good jokes.

With that said there are also bad Jeselnik jokes out there that are offensive, but they're not blatantly wrong like this one appears to be, just not good. I still don't think they're comparable at all.

Never said that, there's multiple examples of it throughout the thread. Unfortunately the cultural landscape of the early 00s meant that those types of insensitive jokes were the norm. My usage of "oddly" is mainly because of how much modern popular culture and language has begun to shift away from the language he uses in the special. Oddly out of touch, not oddly insensitive

Of topic, I guess, but The Comedy Jam premieres on Comedy Central tonight. It appears to be comedians singing karaoke?

Okay, I'm just confused why you were interested in watching specials from a comedian whose material has always consisted of jokes that targeted different races, sexualities and cultures.

Chappelle specials were hit and miss, overall nice to have tho. The LGBT stuff kind of reminded me of when I saw Eddie Murphy's Raw for the first time like four years ago and was like wow, real different time back then. But these were from last year so shit is different.

Favorite line from "The Age of Spin" might be:

"'Shut the Fuck Up?' That's Jay-Z money. And Beyonce's got 'No, you shut the fuck up money.'"
