Just bought - quite literally - the last two seats that were seated together for John Mulaney's show in Cleveland in two months. Will be my first time seeing him.

 

Forgot they started a podcast. This video fully sold me on checking it out.

More of that is needed. As edgy and bold as comics believe they are, they are deathly afraid of saying anything that goes against the comic social scenes they’re in.

 

Saying someone has "Austin brain" is incredible.

 

Jordan Jensen. She did a pod with Ian Fidance for a long time, and she a part of that whole New York Cumtown crew of comics.

 

There’s definitely stuff to criticize who Stavvy associates with. But because he’s a fairly respected comedian in those circles (and seemingly a genuinely funny guy whose views have evolved), really good to see this shit called out.

 

Also, that interview with Stavvy and her is just an insane amount of self hatred directed at women, trans people and lesbians.

 

Yeah Stavvy is a bit of a daywalker in comedy. He carries himself in a very bro-ey "one of the da boys" type way that appeals to the same fans as a lot of Austin comics. But scratch the surface a little and you find he is actually way more empathetic, thoughtful, and intelligent than any of them, and has exact opposite politics from most of them.

This has actually worked out in his favor. He might be one of the few comics in this polarized era in comedy that has fanbases on both sides.

 

I was not as immediate on the post-Cumtown Stavvy train because I do think the ironic racism thing that podcast specifically leaned into was Not Great, but he's definitely been gaining my respect since then

 

Yeah they said some pretty horrendous shit, and even worse they platformed so many terrible people. Most notably the Peter Thiel-funded Red Scare girls

 

To be fair the Red Scare girls were still just regular run of the mill Brooklyn irony leftists when they were on Cumtown and Dasha was engaged to Adam. They didn't make their turn to right wing weird Thiel shit until after.

Also 90% of the ironic racism on Cumtown came from Nick Mullen. Not to take away from Stav and Adam laughing at it. I do think that Mullen is the most naturally funny of the three, just a shame he has to ruin all that potential by having to be an edgelord all the time.

 

Crazy that the edgy bit that finally did Mullen in and fucked his career (for now) was when on TAFS he riffed during a Bluechew ad read "I bet Hamas took Bluechews before they flew the Mariokarts into the music festival" and then in the aftermath he apologized to Hamas for suggesting they take dickpills. I don't even think that is the edgiest ad read he ever did.

 

yeah everything I saw from Nick Mullen was just unfunny and sad, I think using slurs ironically is as bad as just using them

 

The Red Scare girls are so insufferable. Truly unfortunate that they made a pretty fascinating Eyes Wide Shut companion film
