Chris D''Elia and Brendan Shaub gave responses bitching about Maron too but even I couldn't bring myself to watch those. I haven't caught up with Kurt Metzger in years and I had no clue he took a hard right turn the last 5 years. Apparently it's because he was fired from his Inside Amy Schumer writing gig after he publicly defended his rapist friend. He's the co-host of Jimmy Dore's show now lol
It’s a comedy cult. They’re outside any kind of bounds of rational or reasonable argument. They’re going to “attack back” and signal to each other that they get each-other’s back. And their fans will try their best to parrot and support whatever quips they use to dismiss and deflect. The comedy cults have kinda turned me off to almost all standup and a ton of podcasts. I don’t want that stuff shot directly in my brain and I sorta sacrifice potentially missing out on a decent adjacent comic or podcast to keep it all out. I don’t want to be in someone’s cult or hyper-loyal fandom.
I’m no expert in the world of comedy but I always felt the older Gen X comics you typically see perform at the Comedy Cellar in NYC are in one big boys club. No girls allowed, they’re free to joke about anything. But they typically are the first to complain about woke culture.
I just remember that one part from HBO's Crashing where they explain the difference between the Comedy Cellar club comic scene and the UCB alt comedy scene. "There are two types of comics. Club comics are ones that called people f*g in high school, and alt comics were the kids who got called f*g in high school. Which one were you?" "...I got called a f*g in high school" "Okay so you are an alt comic. You belong with us"
I legit thought that was Norm and that the TV station accidentally typed the wrong name in the chyron
Maron was also on Dan Soder’s podcast (a guy that sadly messes around with the Rogansphere and Sam Hyde). Was a fun listen.
I think I remember Stavvy talking about how a lot of millennial comics from his generation just like him grew up listening to Opie & Anthony and idolizing the Patrice/Burr/Jim Norton/Dave Attell/Bobby Kelly/Rich Vos era of Comedy Cellar guys, and there is a lot of blatant cosplaying and larping in club green rooms of what they think those guys were like.
Maron is definitely on an all-timer press run right now lol. I love how a comic of his status is going on the full-on offensive on these hacks
Saw please don’t destroy last night and they opened with one of the same cut sketches the group I saw on Friday did.
He's basically said that he doesn't want to get sick of it and also doesn't want people to say things like, "He's still doing that?" but he is supposed to be directing a movie sometime soon as well so I assume that had a part in it.
Ngl I thought it was borderline crazy to put a feature-length video in here. But this rules. Really nails down the Roganverse cult and why all these morons showing fealty to him.
Bryan and Chris also mentioned it. It's super long but really well done. His past ones are great too.
