yeah saw him a couple weeks before his original special recording was supposed to be before he injured himself, was great. great local opener too. fun to see him 10m from my gfs place. in a mall, hilariously
Outside of when he has some of his dumber comedy friends, like Ari Schaffir, his podcast is like number-one, go-to pod on Mondays. Almost always a delight and he has such a good rapport with just about everyone. I’m glad he didn’t go the Austin route.
I feel like cum town is still sort of hanging over his head though. Like I feel like he's got a contingent of Caleb Hearon-oriented fans (iykwim lol) who will one day discover it and try to cancel him. But, it's not like he's pretending it never existed, or has changed in any real way that would feel disingenuous. So he'll survive if it happens but I do think it will happen
Yeah I agree, some of the people from it are very funny but their fans seem like the worst versions of Doughboys fans
A very grating girl I knew well in high school hosts a popular Dropout show and the clips pop up in my algorithm when she’s got people like PFT on and it bothers me to an irrational degree lol
There is an element of Dropout that feels like theater nerds recreating their own version of the exclusionary systems that would have excluded them. I get the same ick anytime any network has the same 15 people and fans start having parasocial relationships with those 15 people. The UCB-ified comedy and improv and podcast worlds are already so incestuous and exclusive and Dropout kinda adds a whole new layer of exclusivity and parasocial activity. BUT there is good stuff on the network. I subscribe every so often and watch stuff.
Saw Stav at a casino in Rockford. His random jokes off the top of his head were probably better than his written stuff, great show.
I tried watching Gamechanger after hearing praise for it (in this thread, iirc) but wound up turning it off after 10 minutes
Dropout’s ultimately good because it platforms some pretty good comedians and is one of the only ethical streaming services. Obviously ymmv with its actual content. I don’t subscribe because I don’t have the time, but I’m glad it’s out there.
