You don't get to deny accusations and then when you get caught say "Oh yea, but I didn't know better"

It’s a calculated statement. It only admits guilt for the five women in the article when it’s clear this was something far more widespread. He doesn’t actually apologize. He focuses on his perspective of the events in the statement far more than the women’s. He’s going to go the Mel Gibson/Devin Faraci route of staying quiet for awhile and hoping eventually enough time passes where he can resume his career as normal. He was laughing off the rumors as recently as a few days ago and just made a movie about abusive, manipulative men in entertainment. He made the statement because he was backed into it. He’s saying what he thinks are the right things to play into a redemption later on.

Keep in mind, this was his response two years ago:

The idea of click-bait and what you see as online misinformation — is part of what you’re thinking of the Gawker items from last year?4
No. I don’t care about that. That’s nothing to me. That’s not real. For me, Horace and Pete was derailed in terms of its trajectory by this idea that spread online that it was canceled and that I lost money.5 A good friend of mine who’s a movie producer emailed me and said, “Hey, I’m really sorry about Horace and Pete.” Having to disabuse people of this thing could really hurt me with something like the Emmys if people perceive the show as a dead project. I took that pretty fucking personally.

You didn’t feel any compulsion to address the Gawker stuff? I’ve never seen you talk about it.
Well, you can’t touch stuff like that. There’s one more thing I want to say about this, and it’s important: If you need your public profile to be all positive, you’re sick in the head. I do the work I do, and what happens next I can’t look after. So my thing is that I try to speak to the work whenever I can. Just to the work and not to my life.

I agree that he should have said something right away, and that it was a calculated statement. After what he's done, any statement or lack there of is calculated. He could have just as easily denied it happened, or blamed the victims. I just feel that unless he has the power to create a time machine and not be a creep in the past, or spoken out earlier, this is the best he could have done

    hmmm

Pretty much. Any statement he would have made could be torn apart. The issue isn't really the content - it's that the context of its release essentially renders it worthless. He knew what he'd done, he knew how much it would affect his career, he supposedly apologised to a couple of them whilst in public he dismissed it all as false and as Nathan has pointed out, he's only admitted guilt for the people mentioned in the article.

It's a statement that he could have made at any point in the last few years if he was genuinely remorseful. He wasn't and as such his career needs to die for good. It's the best way for him and others like him to learn how destructive their behaviour is.

Everyone saying "what else could he have said" is missing the point. It's not about what he said now. It's about what he said before he was actually caught.

    This.

But also he could have used the words "sorry" "apologize" "wrong" "abuse", not focused on how much he admired these women and that they admired him, and also ADDRESSED THE WHOLE THING ABOUT HIM FORCIBLY SHOVING AN UNNAMED WOMAN INTO A FUCKING BATHROOM THEN FORGETTING WHO THAT WOMAN WAS AND APOLOGIZING TO THE WRONG PERSON FOR IT

So continuing to have the stance of "no comment" would have been better because he deflected in the past?

I think it would have been better than backstepping. I say stick to your story. He said that it "wasn't real" and that he didn't want to give credence to it before, but now he's "apologizing" - Naw, you can't have it both ways.

I guess I just disagree, but I see where your coming from.

I am going to stop posting about this though, because me arguing that I thought it was a decent response is just too damn close to me defending this jackass, and that is not my intent whatsoever.

You're good, man. I wasn't trying to call you out or anything. I know you mean well. I'm just upset because I was a huge fan and I'm disappointed.

On a lighter note, I'm not stoked you guys introduced me to Podcast: The Ride. I don't think I have room in my schedule for another show, but I love it.

Yeah, I wasn't even gonna listen to a second episode of Podcast The Ride, bc like I said before I don't really care/know about theme parks and was only listening for the Doughboys... but now Bug Mane's on, and the show is super enjoyable, so....
