I'm really looking forward to watching the Louis C.K. special. Probably won't get to it until the weekend though.

Louis C.K.'s "2017" has got to be his masterpiece so far. It's impossible for me to watch him speak and not go "this man is somehow the most sane person in the media right now". You might feel shocked at first, but you will end up agreeing with him.

His take on "every religion is equal, but the christians won" was brilliant. 10/10

I saw Louis the day after the election in Texas. It was great. Excited to watch the new special sometime this week.

Watched the new Louis. It's super good, but man, comedians don't understand trans people at all. Or they're purposefully ignorant for the sake of a cheap joke.

I think a ton of people don't understand, mostly because they're a minority group. I don't think it's willful ignorance.

She's doing a week long residency here, so maybe I'll go early in the week in case I like it enough to go a second time and take some other people.

Louis has an entire joke built around a guy who made out with a girl he liked in 6th grade and finding out she transitioned to a woman later in life, and how she said she knew who she was since she was 6, in which case he's pissed at her because "well then why would you make out with my date??", completely missing that gender and sexuality are entirely different things, not even considering that gender identity doesn't adhere to sexual preference.

The one flat note in an otherwise as good as usual Louis special.

Still, you completely get the point he's making in order to get to the punchline. We don't need to be so technical in a stand-up comedy special.

I get what he's saying. He's incorrect/ignorant about the reality of trans people. Therefor, it wasn't funny. It's a critique.

I think it was mostly meant to be a comment about how egotistical he was in that moment. Even if his "first thought" was wrong, it's still his first thought. He shouldn't have to change his first thought, if that's really how it came about. Sometimes thoughts are wrong/ignorant. And then you actually think about it and learn.

I get what you're saying, but I don't think it was meant to be malicious and I don't think it would lead anyone to be misinformed if they otherwise wouldn't be. It's a poor comparison, but it kind of reminds me of those people that watch movies and pick out logical fallacies when they aren't even necessary to the plot. I know that's not what you're doing, but I just don't think something that like should be thought about too deeply in this context. I haven't seen the special though

    run away with me Platinum

I'm equally baffled but not baffled that he'd spend 37 years or whatever being mad about not getting to make out with a girl but yeah I get it he shouldn't have used her dead name etc

Perhaps he's aware of it, but decided to roll with it the way people would understand, otherwise the whole joke would be meaningless.

Let's not forget that he also said "stereotypes are harmful, but the voices are funny" - Louis plays the ignorant/incorrect role for the sake of a joke sometimes.

That can be true and it can still have implications beyond what he intended. Especially when he doesn't further remark upon the difference between gender identity and sexual identity, implying there isn't one.

I'm not sure I agree, given how many people don't understand trans people.

He didn't use her dead name, I don't think. He celebrated her coming out and finding her identity. He just implied that if she came out as a woman, and always knew she was a woman, why did she make out with his date, also a woman? As if trans women can't be attracted to women.

Maybe (and I don't mean to offend you) you're looking to much into it.

Part of Louis' routine is that he has dumb reactions to life's events, and let's face it: people react weirdly sometimes when they're jealous by seeing their dates going out with another guy/girl. He was playing the role of a resented dude decades later.

    hmmm

It's a classic Louis switch of saying something good and positive and then flipping it a little and sort of going back the other way. Yeah technically he's wrong but he frequently says things that are incorrect but are funny because of the emotional reaction. His "of course but maybe" bit in Oh My God is basically the distinction between the moral, rational belief and the reactionary belief.

The whole joke in this case is that switch between him caring about "Jeff"'s story to then going "fuck you and your journey". The basis for it is flimsy but that's not really the point.
